I want to shoot day for night but I need to show the sky?

I want to shoot day for night with an XL1 but it's all exterior and I have to show the sky at least a few times in my script. Is there some kind of graduated filter that I can use to darken the sky?

I use inexpensive Cokin filters. I don't know if Cokin makes a filter holder that fits an XL 1. However they don't make them for my camera either, but I just tape them to the lens.

Cokin makes several graduated filters in grey, blue, green, "tobacco" and other colors. They work great for me!
