How to design low pressure automatic waterer for chicken (poultry equipment) : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I'm tired of cleaning out dirty water bowls because the chickens have kicked up the straw and dirt into them or knocked the waterer over.

I have seen pictures of automatic waterers but haven't seen any close up photo's or found instructions on how to build a low pressure automatic waterer where the waterer fout/dish is hooked up to a bucket. The bucket is on the outside of the cage which makes refilling easy.

Does anyone have any info on how to build this, what supplies I might need etc....?

go to any animal/farm supply,, and take a look at the waters there. ALl they are is a bucket, with a dish around it,, and a small hole that drains into the dish. as the water level in the dish is lowered,, the pressure isnt equal, and will drain until the pressure is equal. Ive made one with a 5 gal bucket and a 55 gal drum, ,all it takes is a tube (hole) from one to the other

Might consider setting up a nipple watering system. "The use of a large type nipple, roaster type, which delivers significantly more water than the smaller broiler type nipple is also recommended. This will improve the growth rate. A nipple system takes considerable less time to clean than bell type drinkers."

Randall Burkey, carries drinking kits and nipple watering parts.

I don't what part of the state you are in, but if you check anywhere between the triangle to the coast, down along I-40, there are a lot of unused turky and chicken houses, complete with good but no longer used equiptment which you can usually get for ,a song and dance. I just mentioned needing some waterers to an old feller at the store and he brought me a pick-up load the next day. Happy hunting.

Like Stan says--just get a bucket waterer. To keep clean make platform l8" square covered with wire to let water thru. Make l0 inches above litter and set bucket on it. Will keep it clean 90% of the time. Simple and foolproof. Can also mount it outside of pen with small slot to slide edge of reservoir thru into chick pen. Again raise it 8 or 10 in. high. good luck, Tomas in BC
