heartworming shih tzu cattle/swine ivomec

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

We are going to get 2 shih tzu monday. They will be 6 wks old. I wanted to know if anyone could tell me about using the ivomec for cattle or swine in dogs this size(less than 10 lbs.) I need to know the specific measurements AND at what age should I start them on the heartworm prevention.

Thanks,

Steve, call your vet. These are just little guys and they are a bit delicate when that young. LQ

Even though I give my adult 100 lb dogs ivermectin I personally would not feel comfortable giving it to such a small dog. Even when I did rescue we would always give puppies the heartguard pills from the vets.

Using ivermectin as a heartworm preventative in dogs is used at a dosage of 1/10th cc per 11 lbs of body weight. So my 110 lb dog gets 1 cc.

Ivermectin for heartworm prevention is given at one-thirtieth the dosage used for worms. The label dosage for cattle when used as a wormer is 1 cc per 110 pounds of animal, roughly .1 cc per 10 pounds. The dosage for a dog heartworm preventative would be one- thirtieth of .1 cc per 10 pounds, impossible to measure for a small dog.

To get around this (and here I quote a Dr. Silverio, veterinarian) you draw .1 cc Ivomec into an insulin syringe. Into a 3 cc veterinary syringe draw 3 cc's of Propylene glycol (the base the manufacturer uses for Ivomec) or vegetable oil. Mix the two thorougly in a test tube or small bottle and you have a solution about one-thirtieth as strong as the original.

You can now measure the dose as you would the original Ivomec, .1 cc per ten pounds of dog. this is still a very minute amount, even drawn in the insulin syringe, for a small pup like the S. Tzu, but it is measurable.

Dr. Silverio said that the dogs apparently liked the taste of vegetable oil better than the P. Glycol, but that the Ivomec mixed better with the P. Glycol since that is what the manufacturer used in the original formulation.

as was written above..then I squirt the stuff on ice cream or yoghurt or even over some raw meat....the first of every month they love it!

And I get to eat the left over ice cream!

Another question? Can I give my collie this, as I know they are sensitive to heartworm medicines? We give heartguard now!

At how many weeks should I begin giving them this? I heard that it is easier to measure the swine ivomec because it is weaker. Anyone familar with the dosage for the puppies with the swine ivomec..I dont guess it matters...?

So the dosage on the cattle ivomec is: after mixing .1cc ivomec and 3cc veg. oil. draw .1cc of that mixer..<<<----THIS IS THE DOSAGE? WIll this mixer keep for a while? Some say that you can mix the ivomec with sterilized water? Is this not so?
