i'm stuck. cant figure out newman's conclusion that there must have been some "terrible aboriginal calamity " to work out if our 'broken world' is evidence of this. is it too simplistic to say it is a complicated way of saying-man is paying for sins of the past. looking forward to getting inspiration regards to all mary

I read the piece. I think you are on the right track. I believe it is man paying for the past. From the time of creation, Man disobeyed God and tried to be on a par with God - evil existed. I suppose you have only to look at the world today to see that man is self destructing. The way man treats his fellow human beings, not to mention the environment is proof enough of mans ways.

I would be inclined to think on the same lines as that. If we believe that we are part of the Fall, by definition as we were created by God, and the knock on affect of the Fall might be our broken world, and the aboriginal calamity could be the Fall. Something that happened which there is no scientific evidence for and also before our time and out of our control. Jackie
