Lots of airplanes?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Real strange thing this morning. Around 7:05, heard a 'roaring' sound outside, like a really low, large airplane(s)...only it kept roaring, and it kept on for a full 15 minutes. Even brought Steve out of the house for a look see. Couldn't see them, must have been on the other side of the mountains, but, my golly they were loud and there was a lot of them. Got my airforce daughter on the phone, who is stationed in Luke AFB, Phoenix, and she could hear them from the phone line...said they sounded like 'heavies'. We don't have a auxillary landing base here in Flag, and she was unaware of anything happening, but was gonna hunt around there on the base and see what was up. Very awesome, scary sort of a sound...reminded me of watching those old war movies. Made me go straight to Father God in my Spirit....Sissy

I live near Camp David, north of DC., and until just recently the fighter planes out on constant patrol were really loud when they passed over or near. I found myself sub-consciously stopping whatever I was doing, and listening. . . . . . almost as if I were waiting for something to happen.

Maybe some of the 60 planes coming home from the battleship Roosevelt were flying to home bases? They arrived stateside on Tuesday.

There is a national guard reserve base 100 miles from here, they fly a large plane & 1 or 2 escorts for years. Kind of rotate their patterns, see them for a year, then nothing for a couple of years. They fly quite low, not very fast. Loud, but not horrible. Quite a show!

I was plowing at dusk one evening, and over the horizon they came. Couldn't hear them over the tractor, but they altered their course & zeroed in on me, right over head. My tractor must have been a 'target'! Quite the hair-raising feeling, altho it was neat. Certainly kept me awake for several more hours of plowing. :)

A Stealth (spelling?) bomber flying slow and low sounds like many planes and last for a very long time (the sound) We had one visiting an air show about 50 miles from us and we were brought right out of the house by the approaching sound and watched for a long time before it finally "appeared". Ever since then I have thought about the poor people in third world countries who live in the villiages and what they thing when these planes fly over.

One summer evening in York, Pa, maybe 1997 or so, I had dropped my then gf off at her house and was going up the road, when I saw lights from a low flying aircraft in the sky, coming my way. I stopped and shut off the car (this is not something I do regularly, but the lights struck me as odd, and the street was little used and it was late at night so what the hey) and sat half out of the window, half in the car (a 70 buick skylark). The lights got closer and closer, and man, that puppy was LOW. But, strangely there was no engine sound. As the jet got overhead, I could very clearly make out its shape- stealth like- outlined against the night sky. I could hear the wind over the wings, it was so low. Just after it flew over, I could see it punch the accelerator, in fact, I could see plainly the jet engines. Instead of having regular jets like F 18 or whatever, as the after burners kicked in, the ribbing or whatever on the sides of the engines (where the flame comes out) was spiraled like a screw or a whirlwind or something. Purple flames, no noise, and when it acceleratd, it was just gone, really fast. And the really weird part- i have asked around with some people who work at various military/ Lockheed places and no aircraft had engines set in this formation they knew of- there were 3 jets, all stuck side by side on the rear portion of the body (horziontally set), all the same size, all having the spiral flames. Weird! Living here in NC, the F 18s are always flying maneuvers around, we have been woken up a 3 am with what sounds like a tornado coming in, the windows rattling, and hav it turn out to be a couple of F 18s coming in low and fast. I always look and think about how much gasoline those puppies are burning "joyriding." I know, its not joyriding, but wish they would train over the ocean or something, or at least during waking hours!

Kevin, sounds like you had a "close encounter"!

Kevin, it sounds like the military is experimenting with "sound dampening' equipment on their jets. I studied it in Physics a few years back. If you put out a sound that is identical in frequency with the sound you are dampening but has the "hills" and "valleys" reversed you flatten out the sound waves and nothing comes thru that can be heard. Expensive technology, but the military believes in denying themselves nothing.

Just remember folks, that's the sound of Freedom! LOL When we live in 'Vegas(for 30 years)we enjoyed the Thunderbirds practicing all the time and all of the many and varied military aircraft flying in and out of Nellis AFB. And then there were the wonderful civies flying in for airshows. I miss seeing them a lot. Here where we are now we rarely see or hear aircraft. LQ

I had a positive experience with the military in VA. When we first bought our farm there we expereinced low level flying stealth jets the following summer. We lived in the boonies and in a very rural area. We were also very close by air miles to Andrews Air Force Base and VA Beach and the NC bases. I happened to be outside this one morning and saw these jets go soaring over the top of the trees and narrowily missing the top of our house. Ok, so maybe it was just a once in a great while occurance. But then it happened for a few more days. The time it really scared me and prompted action was when our cows busted through their barbed wire fence and some got cuts. The planes flew so close it skimmed the tops of the trees. I called the military bases in Blackstone, talked with a very ncie gentleman there and then he referred me up the chain of command until I got to the person who could help. I was very polite and mentioned the situation. To my surprise he was very understanding and said that he had received other concerns from other farmers and a lady who had MS that couldn't sleep well and the planes were a constant over her farm. So he said he was taking atrip out anyways to see the region and flight plans as they had not been updated in 40 years. After his ride over he called me back to tell me they were re routing their flight routes to go around the farm. I was so very appreciative. I actually didn't think the military could be so understanding and cooperative. That impressed me.

This is probably something that may not be able to happen in other cases of low level flying jets in other areas, but it sure never hurts to let the military know if its a case of being a risk to safety. The other thing that was mentioned to me was when ever buying realestate to check the air space plans as well. In northern VA several folks in the 'burbs complained about the planes and test bombings rattling their houses and causing damage to their foundations. But their cases were dismissed because those developments were built on areas that were in the zones. Whenever I visit my friend near DC the helicopters fly very low and shake the house, but she is in one of the designated areas. And yep, its a scary sound, but it also is re assurance that the military is out there protecting us.

We see and hear many species of aircraft often, being "close" to several military installations.

In several instances they've honed in on our flagpole as a target!!!!! We fly the USA, POW-MIA, and Bonnie Blue flags, so we're pretty easy to find, LOL.

They also tend to follow the river doing their refueling exercises, so we get some real awe-inspiring entertainment.

This could be very unsettling for some people, but I run out and wave and jump up and down and do semaphores for I Love You and USA USA !!

Yeah, I'm nuts about 'em.

God bless the USA and all service members.
