What does 500 mile service consist of please?

Hi guys i am a new mv f4 owner and my bike is a 2000 model with 300miles on the clock and i was wondering what does the 500mile service comprise of and how often is it advisable to have an mv f4 serviced.Unfortunately i have no owners manual due to my boss being not able to find it becourse it was he who gave me my f4 as a gift,so out goes my zzr.By the way picked up a nice number plate today reading BRUTAL,shame my bike is not a Brutale ey!!

Hmm, and where is it you work? And are they hiring?

The first service is to change the oil and filter because the engine will have a fairly large amount of metal shavings in it from the rings against the cylinders, gears, etc. There will be some safety checks to make sure everything is still tight. They will adjust the chain. I was under the impression that they check/adjust the valves, but apparently this isn't so on all new bikes.

I recently purchased a 2002 MV from a dealer who is about 100 miles away. Being a relatively honest guy, he advised me the 500/600 mile service could be stretched to 1,000 miles, since that's the main break in period of the bike.

Additionally, he told me the initial service could be done anywhere. The initial service is primarily the oil and filter change and just to make sure all the bolts and screws are tight. He did say the manual calls for a valve adjustment, but he doesn't feel it's very necessary.

With your bike being a 2000 model with only 300 miles, you probably should change the oil sooner than the 1,000-mile service.

In regards to service, after the initial service, there's the 3,000 miles service, which is also an inspection and oil change. I believe the 6,000-mile service is the main service, wherein the valves should be check and spark plugs are replaced. I'm doing this of memory but the link to the manual should answer all your questions. Good luck..

There's a lot of theories about break in. "Break it in fast, the bike will be fast. Break in slow, the bike will be slow." and so on. The first 20 minutes or half hour will produce the majority of the metal shavings that come out of the cylinders. It's not a bad idea at all to change the oil and filter only a few hours after the first time it's started up for this reason.

Racers only break engines in for a few minutes before they are ready to race. I don't doubt that the engine is still settling in at 1000 miles, but on the other hand, I wouldn't consider that the "break in" period either.

In the end both theories are probably right, but you don't want to go to either extreme right in the beginning.
