My first real job was working for a place in Fayetteville, NC, called Sound Systems, Inc. They specialized in high-end audio systems, including lease-breakers (MacIntosh and Crown amplifiers driving entire walls filled with Klipsh corner horns, f'zample) that were capable of killing small insects and setting your neighbor's hair on fire.

Well, the spirit lives on. Any of you who have the requisite $18,000, a house the size of a aircraft hanger and absolutely no sense as welcome to try this one:

(I was really more into car stereo, actually. Hey, the kids are proud of their subwoofers and stuff now, man, I had TWO 12" bass drivers in my little Chevrolet Vega back in 1975!!! :)

Depends on what you're trying to do. :)

The funny thing is, everyone makes fun of the kids with their huge car stereos now, but I have to be honest, we considered it a status symbol when I was a teenager, too. That's one reason I installed the two 12" woofers -- back when NO ONE was doing that sort of thing. :)

I was loud and proud. Of course, the problem back then was that the amplifiers were crap. I bought one set of 6x9's that had the amp built-on to the back of the speakers; they lasted about 2 days before they blew up most royally.

Today's kids laugh at 6x9's. Even worse, they've never heard of the 8-track, and its most indispensible accessory: that little folded piece of paper that you wedged under the cartridge to make it track right! [g]

I can't remember what year it was. I do remember that it was wonderful.

We took it to the mountains of NC for a church retreat one time. This cute girl asked my friend and I to take her back to her cabin, and we were only too happy to oblige. The driveway was a loop that dipped way, way down.

I got down to the bottom and couldn't get out!!! The engine didn't have enough power!!

I finally backed it as far up the entrance as possible and gunned it so that I'd have enough momentum to make the rise, all the while praying that no one was coming up the road ...

Ah, those were the days. :)

The Vega is of interest to the industrial historians that I have read in that it marks the point at which GM stepped off of the abyss and committed the company to a declining roll as an auto manufacturer. It wasn’t the worst car that they have made. While it lacked the sophistication and reliability of the later Yugo, the Vega, even with its self-warping head and auto-rust as a required option, was a much better car that the Chevette/T1000. Those were dangerous.

I see a lot of "classic" cars on the road. None of them are Vegas, Chevettes, Pintos or Horizons. Those were the dark years.

Hah!! I had a Chevette, too!

My favorite experience with THAT one was driving down the highway at 55 one day ... and the STEERING went out. I mean, you turn the wheel, and it just sort of goes "klunk ... klunk" and the car keeps going whereever it pleases.

I managed to get it off the (left -- fortunately, no one was coming!) side of the road, whence I let it sit. After it was repaired, I sold it.
