Color neg 8x10 for studio portraits

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Large format photography : One Thread

I shoot 8x10 portraits in my home studio with strobes using TMAX 100, Provia, E100S, and Polaroid 804/809. I would like to try some color negs as well. Looking at B&H I can see that the pickings are pretty slim: NPL, NPS, Portra 160NC/VC, and Portra 400NC. Has anyone used any of these? Any recommendations?

Use the lower contrast of these. The Kodak line keeps the same colour rendition throughout. The Fuji has great shin tones, but please use a lab that specialises in that film, For instance in Toronto, Steichen Lab and Fuji equals outstanding skin tones, Silvano lab and Kodak equals outstanding skin tones. I have not tried the 400nc but I want to.

I like Portra 160NC in 120, which favors a pastel kind of tonality. Haven't tried it in 8x10".
