There are many reasons why this can happen. The most common are: 1. the prism is not fully snapped into place 2. the manual lever is engaged when using an auto lens 3. the light entering the lens is outside the metering range shown by the finder.(ie you could have the speed set to a fast setting and aperture to a small stop but the light entering lens is not enough to activate the meter.

I found this confusing at first also. Trouble is, without having my camera to hand, I have forgotten how I handle it. But as I remember, it makes a difference which is attached to the body last - the prism or the lens; play around with that. Whatever works, it is probably a rehash of the suggestions in the reply preceding mine - just a different way of getting there.

Also check your film speed is set correctly.

Reuben: If the finder has been taken off and replaced since the lens was last removed, the linkage for the finder does not connect. Hence the lack of meter response. You need to remove and remount the lens after installing the finder.
