pond liner questiongreenspun.com : LUSENET : Country Style Homesteading : One Thread |
Hi all, My neighbor got a new tractor with all the goodies a few weeks ago. Anyway he dug me a pond 25 feet by 40 feet and 3 to 4 feet deep. $90.00 great price and looks good! This is sandy soil so I'll need to line it with something. Looking for suggestions-pretty much blew our budget- so el cheapo is the way I'll have to go. Any and all ideas welcome. Thanks,Daryll

Well, until I re-read your post I was going to suggest that you let your pigs in the area for a while - I've heard they will seal a new pond pretty well. But with it being a high sand content, I don't think that will work. We've got to get our pond dam repaired and the pond cleaned out this year. Got muskrats in it year before last that ruined the dam before I could get rid of them. It's a spring-fed pond, so it still hasn't gone dry, but it's not much more than a puddle. I can't wait to get it fixed and full again! I'm sure you're anxious for yours to be filled, too.
I know I've rambled and haven't been much help - hope you get it worked out, Daryll. Let us know what you use and how it works out!

Hi Phil, Yea-I saw that thread earlier. I also asked the question on countryside and freedom forums. I think I'm going to run my pigs in there for a few days and let them work it over for me and then layer with old carpet and used pool liners if I can find any for a reasonable price. Thanks for the info,Daryll

Daryll, Oh, my, that sounds like a project you have on your hands. Bentonite clay sounds like your best bet, to me, in your sandy soil. I wouldn't want your assignment. We have a number of ponds here on our property but we're blessed with clay and peat. Bentonite is also good for any fish you might be planning on stocking. Good luck! Linda
