Time line to build with Cob?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Hi, we are gearing up to build our home out of cob. we are not looking to build anything huge but I understand what we want to do is considered large for cob. anyone have any idea what kind of timeline we are looking at for 2 people dilligently building 1000 sf home out of cob. we would be using a mixer in order to help facilitate the process. we are also seriously considering using rammed earth bags for a foundation. thanks everyone!

Hi Naijia, I am also building with cob beginning this spring/summer. I expect to do most, if not all, by myself. I am planning on four seasons of building, hopeing it will be much shorter. This spring, summer, fall and next spring, winter is out of the question for digging and mud building in Michigan. Keep in mind that even if you can mix it "fast" with a cement mixer, you can only build about a foot up at a time. Wet walls will need time to set before adding to the height. Also, if you mix and let it set overnight it will bond and work better for some reason. It likes to cure before using, altho it is not necessary. Most of my time will be used on the foundation and the roof, not on the cob building itself. I started last fall by digging out half the floor space (using a shovel and wheelbarrow). My cottage will be 14 x 20' to begin with. Starting very small and planning to build on was the way I decided to go. That way I will have shelter as soon as possible without a really long discouraging wait. Have fun, and I know you can do it.

Another thought Najia....have you seen pictures of cob buildings in England? They are HUGE! 1000 sq ft is not large. Whole manor houses (read: the Master's house) are built of cob. A dozen rooms, three storys, a couple of chimneys...wow, what can be done with cob is considerable. I am excited for you (and me too).

The April/May issue of Mother Earth News has an article on building with the earth's materials including cob. maybe that would help you.

Thanks Susan and Charlene! We are very excited and cannot wait. I think you are onto something with getting the shelter started and then adding on, Susan. We will have to relook at our plans and consider this! :)

no , its not large for cob, but remember to make the base large enough that your slope as you rise isnt too extreme, should only take you , if working only weekends, all summer, if full time, 6-8 hours a day, 1-2 months, keeping inmind you do need time to let it cure , and rain delays, and recovery days ....
