Does any one know anything about hops?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I have a hops vine. It is producing abundantly. Does anyone know when to harvest, how to store the hops? Also anything else that may be of use.

I love the forum, it sure is a way to get some answers to your questions.

Yup, pick the hops when they are still green but papery. Dry them, uncovered, in a garage or other warm area. I like them for hops pillows and such. Others like to make beer from them. Lovely plant. Also makes neat Hopsvine Wreaths. Pretty simple to twist and make into a wreath. Or you can take a grapevine wreath and wrap some hops around it. Along with rosevines with hips... Enjoy.

Carole: Be careful with this vine, as a LOT of people seem to be allergic to it. We had lots of hops in our yard in the city. I really wish we had transplanted some here at the farm, but I'm sure I'll be able to find some. The only problem is that all of us would get a really painful rash just by brushing by it. It seemed to happen to anyone who went thru the vine. It sure does spread fast, too. Just an FYI. Good luck. Judy

i don't have time to go look up my resources at the moment, but it can effect menstrual cycles etc., and isn't advised that women be doing a lot of harvesting if they have having problems. I can't remember if it can cause breakthrough bleeding or heavy bleeding or what.

I on the other hand would harvest them without a second thought if i were you since you aren't harvesting fields and fields!

Hops is preferable to valerian to use for insomnia brought about by thinking too much....going over all the details from the days before, preplanning the days to come down to the events and conversations, etc. So, when you have active brain insomnia, try hops! And this is why probably so many claim valerian doesn't help their insomnia.....they are needing hops instead!

Did you know that hops have a natural alcohol content? If you make tea from them, it will be alcoholic. They continue to increase their alcohol content during storage, peaking at 2 years. That's why they promote sleep.
