My colt has really thick wooly hair that is really hard to brush. Will he lose ite when he sheds this year and just have normal horse hair?

Jessica,

Go buy a shedding blade for your horse. I spent some time grooming one of our wooliest horses last weekend and the ground was just covered with horsehair. He now looks much smaller and slicker ;-)

Getting him on a regular worming schedual will also help him lose all his wool.

Jessica, where are you located? Is this his winter coat? If you are in a cold climate, I'd wait til he sheds in the spring before treating him with anything. Best wishes!

Your colt should shed out to a slick summer coat, if his coat is dull and ragged looking he may need deworming. Is he on a good bimonthly deworming schedule? I use a three dewormer rotation Ivermectin, double dose Strongid, and Quest. Don't use Quest on any horse that you don't know the deworming record, or any debilitated horses I won't be using it on pregnant mares either.

Everyone around here is shedding like crazy...horses, dogs, goats, it all ends up on me tho!

He should start shedding soon. Some are just slower that others just at some put on more coat that others.

If you're in a cold climate, he's still probably got his winter coat. There are a lot of horse supplements to improve horses coats out there. Even a basic vitamin supplement added to his daily grain can improve the coat. If you are in a warm climate and it has been that way for quite some time and the horse doesn't appear to be shedding, contact your vet. I saw a horse that had a thyroid problem and this happened. Happy Brushing. :-)

Late colts (born after July or so) seem to be woolier than those born early in the year. He'll slick up! Don't worry. If not, sell him as a Curly Bakshir.... just kiddin...

Cushing Disease is also a possibility. You might want to do a search at http://www.google.com for "Horse" cushing and you can read up on it, but by now you may have found your colt shedding
