Canonet 28 fails on Auto

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Camera Equipment : One Thread

My Canonet 28 will no longer release the shutter when the aperture is set to A. If I choose a specific f-stop, the shutter release fine and visually the openings look about right. I've tried two new batteries.

Besides taking it in for a checkup, does anyone have any ideas what else I might do before resorting to spending more money?

Keith,

Can you provide a little more detail. With the aperture dial on A, does the camera selected aperture show in the viewfinder? When you vary the shutter speed (with the aperture dial set on A) does the aperture selected by the camera change in the viewfinder? The reason I ask these questions (and I apologize if you have already thought of this) is that if you select a shutter speed, and the appropriate aperture is outside the range of apertures available, the shutter won't fire. Check the aperture needle in the viewfinder. If the needle is in the red zone above or below the available apertures, the shutter won't fire.
