Swollen Jaw

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I have two goats Mother and her last years Doe that both have swollen bottom jaws, not on the sides but the bottom. What is this? They have both kidded with in the last two weeks and are eating and acting OK except for this. I wormed them both yesterday. Thanks for your time and help. Sandie

Go to this link, then about half way down the page is "Is your goat showing signs of parasites?" or something like that, click on it and read up on bottle jaw. Vicki

I would have a fecal to make sure the wormer you are using is doing the job. Don't feel secure of no parasites because of your wormer. My ewes worm's have an immunity to white wormers which is making life somewhat difficult in choices. Vet said not to touch a white wormer for at least if not longer than a year. I had a case of bottle jaw two years ago and it took a lot to get rid of it. Make sure this doe has protein in her diet.

Thanks to all for there help. I used Tramisol for the wormer, but after reading through the old post wondered if I should use Ivomect or Valbazen or something else? I feel so stupid for letting this happen. My other goats look so good and all get the same food, water, pasture ect. but when I got these two I did't worm them right off.

You shouldn't feel stupid at all. Each of us has many times thought we were doing the right thing, only to find out there was information available that we hadn't seen yet. Join the club - we all have learned by experience.

Maybe we should have a "thank you Vickie thread" here. Maybe there is one here already. Anyway, the advice I have received from this forum has saved the lives of several little guys and girls(AND at least one Mom).
