Another Word for Someone

When you're really down and confused and full of fear, start praising God. Not thanking Him or asking for forgiveness or praying for others or yourself. Just start praising.

Cindy, I believe you are starting to go over the edge with this God and Jesus thing. My suggestion is hold on tight, it's a great ride and it can last a lifetime. Gary in AL

He wants our all, not holding back. What if He had held back? The world will mock...

thank you cindy I really needed to hear this today

Fishdawg, I said "hold on" not "hold back". I try to live by Matt 10:7&8 everyday. Have a Great Day! Gary in AL

Hello Cindy,

Does it count if I praise someone else? Such as Ra, Allah, Buddha, Zoraster, Mitra, or L. Ron Hubbard!

I think it doesn't matter which God or Messiah you praise, as your belief in him or her will achieve the same results by uplifting your spirits.

This is sponsered by those of us that are not Christian.

Sincerely,

Ernest

Ernest, God has given you freewill to do as you please. He loves you that much. However you will reap the rewards. I went looking in so many of those same places and others, they all came back empty. Then I went looking for God in God and all the emptiness was gone. Why settle for second best?

I read this quote once and it goes something like this, I can't go get the real thing as Cale is sleeping!!!

"When you are the commander of an aircraft carrier, in the middle of a storm, in the middle of the ocean, and there are 20 planes circling waiting for directions on what to do, there is only one thing that must be true about your decision...IT HAD BETTER BE RIGHT!"

I often think of this quote...when it feels like we are in the middle of the vast oceans, and the storms are closing in, and a decsion must be made, I pray it is right!!!

-- Melissa in SE Ohio (me@home.net), March 06, 2002.

Melissa, a very fine illustration. Not that I didn't like your paraphrase of it, but when Cale wakes up, I'd be interested in seeing the original.

Reminds me of a discourse I read that had been given around the turn of the century. Would believing in a bank that's about to go belly up make your deposits any safer? Or to update the illustration: The Enron Corp. is doing great; anybody like to invest? If you believe me, still won't help you much. You'll lose you bucks all the same. You'd better have the right information.

There's a Bible story along those lines, too, in the Old Testament.

Hi Randal, here is the quote in its' entirety. I wasn't too far off!

This came from the Reader's Digest Magazine, about 18-20 years ago. I know I have had it at least that long.

"When you are the commanding oficer of a large aircraft carrier, sitting in the middle of the ocean, in the middle of a brewing storm with the wind picking up and waves running high and 20 aircraft carriers circling overhead awaiting instructions as to how to land, only one thing is important about your decision...it had better be right." -Admiral Noel Gaylor

That's great, Melissa! I really like it. Thanks a bunch. You made me think of a good question for CF posters. New thread, please! (Drum roll.)

when I find myself going through something, I quote I Peter 4:12-13. This post is the second time today I have told someone about this scripture. Karen

Here we go again with the presumption and condecension. Ya'll are certainly entitled to believe whatever you want but Ernest is exactly right on IMO. "Second best" is determined by the quality of our devotion, not by what we are devoted to. Love is Love.

-- john (natlivent@pcpros.net), March 09, 2002.

Hi, John. I certainly respect your right to your own beliefs and principles. At the same time, I doubt you live by that in other areas of your life. If your married, your wife certainly would not appreciate that sentiment. If you work for a company, your boss wouldn't think much of it either. Why is it that in religion it ought to be true?

If it is true that Jesus is the divine Son of God, and it may be shown to be true, and if it is true that the Bible is correct and reliable in all its parts, and it is, and if it is true that Jesus was raised the third day from the dea, and it is, then those facts must determine many things about the way we live and think.

If the bank fails to credit your account with a deposit, do you mind? Or do you maintain your devotion to it in spite of that? Your devotion may be the best of the world, but if it is directed toward an incorrect or unworthy object, or to many objects, it fails to be quality. You may believe a politician to be the greatest in the world and devote many energies and efforts toward his election and support. If you discover, however, that he was not the man you thought him to be, does that matter? If you discover he embezzled public money? Sold state secrets to unfriendly nations? Will you continue to support him? No, and why? Because you want something, someone WORTHY of your devotion. It doesn't matter how good your devotion was, your devotion, to be quality devotion it must have a proper object.

I hope this clarifies something of the difference in the issue at hand. Rather than being presumption and bad attitude on the part of those who believe in Jesus and the Bible, it is to offer a certainty to those who have none and live without real foundations and anchors. Ultimately, that will get tiresome, for the human being was not made to live without them.

Best to you,

Randal

-- Randal at home in Brazil (randal@onebox.com), March 10, 2002.

I don't believe it is condescending at all. You can believe in whatever God or god you wish, my quote was just to illustrate the thought that at the last minute, I would imagine most are praying they are right! I kind of think God is pretty understanding. As I have said before he can see what is in our hearts, and he knows better than anyone what you really are!!! No one is forcing anyone to read or believe anything they don't want to.

-- Melissa in SE Ohio (me@home.net), March 10, 2002.

There are a number of things in your post Randal that I could take issue with but I don't want to be a spoiler here.

Cindy's comment about "second best" is indeed condecending and presumptious. She speaks as tho she has experience with other religions and found no comfort there. Thats understandable. Just as understandable and true is the fact that numerous other people do find comfort in places other than Christianity after having been raised "Christian".

Alot of folks who consider themselves Christian recognize the value of and the numerous similarities between Christianity and other religions and thats a good thing in spite of what you might like to think.

Its all fine and good to believe oneself to be right about this or that but its prudent and wise IMO to recognize that our "belief" is little more than another opinion.

If you wanna continue this discussion e-mail me and we'll take it from there.

-- john (natlivent@pcpros.net), March 10, 2002.

Hi, John. Yes, there are some similarities in other religions, but none have the factual basis which forms the core of their faith. I find it interesting that you equate belief with opinion. They can be synonymous, I suppose, but there is a belief based on fact. Which is what Christianity is, in its pure form. There are, I admit, forms of so-called Christianity that have little to do with the original teaching that Jesus left.

John, I'd be interested in continuing with you by email; however, considering my work load, I'd better not try it just now. Even here on CF, I'm an occasional poster. My apologies if that makes me a hit-and-run poster; not intentional, just unfortunate. Do wish I had more time to pursue so many of the good exchanges available here and in other places. Actually, I'm trying to get myself more focused on my Portuguese jobs, which is what I'm really about. Other stuff is just time off. Well, more than you wanted to read about, I'm sure.

Best,

Randal

Gary in Al, I went tover the edge once, and guess what, Jesus was there waiting for me.

-- Cindy (SE. IN) (atilrthehony@hotmail.com), March 11, 2002.

Isn't the idea of believing in something, to really believe in something, and to support that belief and know why you believe, and offer it to others? Pure and simple; no manipulating of words. Isn't freewill having the freedom of accepting or not accepting beliefs of others, without being manipulated or having words manipulated.
