I have trouble getting high scores to register on any game. I a using mame08 and have unzipped hiscore.dat to my mame dir. I also have placed nvr files in the appropriate dir. Should these scores appear on the game high score list next time I play the game as I would expect or are they stored elsewhere? Any help would be appreciated.

Not all games support high-score saving. Those that do should indeed restore the high score table as it was when you last exited the game, assuming you were not attempting to record an inp file at the same time.

Which games in particular have you tried?

Patwos, I have tried numerous games eg, Galaga, Columns, bubble bobble and joust. I will go home tonight and confirm all of the versions of programs etc that I have running on mame and get back to you. If you can give me a game that definitely works I will give it a try. Thanks.
