My Thanks for your kind and encouraging words...

What a great group of people you all are. I'm sure you know how it feels to do something different. We all hear the comments on how its so easy to buy your lettuce instead of growing it, and how soap is cheap anyway, why make it? I am 28 years old, married with (4 children in 5 years) we homeschool, have our own business-are devoted to Jesus Christ..and people think we are CRAZY. We teach our children, that its okay to be different, to EXPECT to be different. We teach them about things that matter...they learn how cabable they are, right here on our land, with what God has provided for us. My 4 year old runs around outside chasing butterflies, while my 8 year old tries to identify it. My 6 year old can bring the horses in for the night, as well as feed and water them. My 3 year old, follows along picking up the little bits of hay that fall off the bail. They have their own part in the garden, they love to play and draw... And throughout all of this, people say..but you don't have CABLE?? How do they learn their abc's?? LOL..I won't even start there. This way of life is so fullfilling in ways that most people unfortunatly do not understand. It is such an encouragement to me to see you all with your wonderful questions, on how to make life better with what you already have. What a concept! The world is so full of.....more, get more, have more. Families are being lost to this...and that is so sad. Keep up the great work everyone. We are on our way to self sufficiency, one step at a time..sometimes maybe two at once *lol* but thats all part of learning. Thank you again, May god richly Bless you all.

Aimee, How right you are. I was once one of those caught-up-in-having- more kind of people you are talking about. My husband & I both grew up in a life where we didn't have a lot & thought that the road to happiness was based on how much we could have. Now we have a house in the country, more work, less money, & more love & happiness than we ever thought possible. Not to mention the positive effects on our 13 yr. old. It's hard to get in too much trouble when you are busy helping take care of a farm - and sex ed in the form of assisting the animals to deliver is great also!(Oooh, yuck!!!!)LOL All "kidding" aside we have great fun - even with all the work, minor (& major) catastrophies, even the occassional disasters - I wouldn't trade it for anything - we chose this way of life, as certainly as it chose us! Blessings to you!

Stormy, I have the most priceless picture of my 2 children, ages 7 and 4 at the time, at their first kidding. The looks on their faces say it all...half wonder and half "ooo, yuck!" But would you like to hear a very sad comentary on society in general? I have offered to several families locally that I could call them when we have a kidding or lambing so the young children could come and watch and they all turned me down. They were afraid of the questions that might be a result of seeing an actual birth! Oh my goodness. I was dumbfounded. Maybe I should have invited the parents instead!

Hi Aimee! I too am from eastern Ontario. Where in eastern Ontario are you? We live near Kemptville - 30 min. south of Ottawa. I heartly concur with what the others advised you to do & go slow with your dreams. Instant gratification can also mean instant problems & headaches that you didn't bargain for. A family member of ours went the instant gratification route & they have been up to their ears in problems ever since - for the last 10-15 yrs. Unfortunately it was the kids that suffered the most with sub standard living conditions even though they are also a Christian family. My husband & I tried to help as much as we could but just got slapped silly for our efforts. My advice is to go slow once you have the gardening mastered then try a small orchard & berries. Learn how to use & preserve these 7 ways to sunday then move on to say a few chickens & so on & so on. I guess you get my idea. Wishing many blessings in your endeavours & may the good Lord bless your socks off.

Aimee:

I think your post was funny when you mentioned cable and ABCs. We have never had cable in our 11 years with children, but when my daughter was 2 or 3 I realized all my friend's kids knew their abcs but ours didn't. somehow it seemed a monotonous task, and then i remembered SESAME STREET, and our daughter had her first experience of public television. And she knew her abcs in a week, but had n and m reversed...
