is the canon eos ef 135mm f/2.0 a good candid portrait lense!

candid? i'd use a 100mm instead. the 135mm is quite a bit larger than the 100mm, and if candid is your thing, i'd keep size to a minimum! not to mention the 100mm is quite a bit cheaper, as well, and is every bit as good as the 135mm.

if i misunderstood candid, explain what it means to you.

candid as in unaware. and by the way thats a good point on lense size I've seen pictures of the two side by side and the 135 is much larger

The EF 135 2.8 SF is small (58 mm filter), light and sharp as a whip. It lacks USM but has fast AF due the IF design and small elements. Motor noise is pianissimo but not silent. Oh, it's about grand cheaper than the ef 135mm f/2.0L USM!

I find it works great as a street lens if you like to shoot from the hip (fast aperture and no zoom to mess around with and lose the shot).

The 135 f/2L is one of the best lenses there is, period.

BTW, the word "lens" does not have an "e" at the end.

I certainly agree that the 135mm focal length is the very best for candid street photos, however one of the most important things I have found in this type of photography is speed and flexibility, just look at Henry Cattier Bressons work. For this reason you will probably find the 135 f2.8 more practical. it is much lighter has a 52mm filter (not 58) and is much smaller than the 2.0.
