To move the board or not to move...

greenspun.com : LUSENET : MAME Action Replay : One Thread

That is the question posed to you. All in favor of moving to forums to seymour's http://forums.marpirc.net will signify by saying "aye", all opposed will say "no". This motion expires March 11, 2002 at 2359 GMT.

Regardless of the result, this forum will stay intact for historical purposes.

I give you this motion because seymour's forum is a hell of a lot better than this one. You can still do email alerts like greenspun, and you can still categorize the board like greenspun (something that I'm going to work to improve - the categories that is), and searching the forum is a heck of a lot easier. The forum looks nicer as well. I'm sure seymour can find several more reasons why his forum is better than this one.

Therefore, I say "aye". GB9

Answers

Aye. Plain and simple.

Yes definately. That forum is much better like you say and it seems a waste because no one really uses it. So thats an 'aye' from me too!

-- DRN (darrenhdg@hotmail.com), March 04, 2002.

can we "transition" the old board entries into the new one, so when we do searches we can find old stuff? seymore's looks good but it took me 10 seconds to load the first page, i'd hate to think what would happen when we put a bunch of messages onto it (note there aren't many at all right now.) greenspun does suck but at least it's relativly snappy.

i'd vote aye if seymore's page can handle the load of 1000's of messages and somehow we could import the old ones.

I vote yes. I never did like the greenspun forums much :)

Chad: depending on greenspun's export abilities, it -might- be possible. If it is, I can work on doing that. But the main page loads pretty much instantly for me - I think you might have tried to view the page while I was upgrading it to a newer version of phpBB, which didn't take very long. To see an example of a heavily used phpBB - look at http://phpbb.sourceforge.net/phpBB2 - which has close to 40000 articles.

Another good reason to move would be that I'm usually around in some form or another, so if something breaks (not likely, but it's possible), it can get fixed pretty quickly :)

I vote yes as well. Greenspun isn't always snappy, and right now, Im wondering where e-mail notices from this board are. Only knew about this from #marp (EFNet). Not that it's a function I necessarily care for.

-- Barry Rodewald (bsr@hnpl.net), March 04, 2002.

After taking a look at the greenspun admin interface, it has the ability to export all of the content to a file, so I should be able to script something to import to the forum software I'm using. Should make searching old posts much easier :)

-- Chris Gushue (seymour@marpirc.net), March 04, 2002.

my vote is no longer conditional, it's all aye. importing of old greensperm articles is possible and loads fast with lots of articles.

-- Chad (churritz@crash.cts.com), March 04, 2002.

One more thing - currently phpBB allows a user to get replies to a topic they post. There are some mods in progress that add an option to get notified on any new post/reply, so I'll work on that this week. Hopefully I'll have it done by the time this vote is over. I already modded the forums to have statisics :)

Maybe I should learn how to spell:

Forum Stastics

-- Chris Gushue (seymour@marpirc.net), March 04, 2002.

That should be "Forum Statistics", of course. I don't know what's wrong with me today...

-- Chris Gushue (seymour@marpirc.net), March 04, 2002.

Aye, aye, oh god aye.

Surely I can't be the only one tired of receiving mail notices from idiots who found ancient threads here via Google, then proceed to make a post asking for people to mail ROMZ to him. Thus spamming everyone who has mail notices on.

Aye. Actually, I find it quite amusing BBH.

Just an update - I finished the feature on the forums that can email you when there is a new post on the forums. If there are any problems with it, please let me know so I can fix them.

-- Chris Gushue (seymour@marpirc.net), March 04, 2002.

After having to type the email addy and my name yet again because of the persistent cookie bullshit I say

AYE! Yes! Affirmative!

-- Tim Morrow (tmorrow@bigpond.net.au), March 05, 2002.

It can only be better. I vote Aye.

-- Blost (Blost@mail.com), March 05, 2002.

I also vote aye.

Bye.

-- Chad (churritz@crash.cts.com), March 06, 2002.

I VOTE YES NOT "AYE" YES

-- [AgN]monkey_midget (pimpdavid15@yahoo.com), March 06, 2002.

I vote in the affirmative.

Cheers, Patwos.

Aye. yes. But till now I cannot send my profiles. When I finish my profiles, I canīt see the message of sucess.... Sadly. :(

-- INNUENDO-DF (funit@bol.com.br), March 06, 2002.

I apologize for the short system downtime last night - the box this website is hosted on went down for a memory upgrade (from 512MB to 1GB). I would have let everyone know, but I wasn't given any advance warning. Sorry :)

Things should work just fine now.

-- Chris Gushue (seymour@marpirc.net), March 06, 2002.

Ok I've registered to the new board, but how can I get automatic email sending for each post ? there was about 30 posts today, I received none

-- phil (plamat@club-internet.fr), March 06, 2002.

You need to do it on a per-forum basis. ie: go to each forum and click the "Watch this forum" link at the bottom of the topic list.

-- Barry Rodewald (bsr@hnpl.net), March 07, 2002.

Just tried to register on the new board and got this:

Sorry but that email address is already registered to a user Sorry but this username has already been taken

It wasn't me! This is the first time I tried to register.. whoever took my name and email give it back goddamnit :)

Barry wrote : "You need to do it on a per-forum basis. ie: go to each forum and click the "Watch this forum" link at the bottom of the topic list. "

Mmmmm ... thanks Barry ; I've done that . But the only mail I received was to tell me there were new posts (big surprise!) and that I've to go to the board to read them, but it doesn't mail you the substance of each post (like old board was doing). And it really sucks to go and have a look there.

I hope that Seymour will be able to fixed that, or I gonna start to regreat old board

-- phil (plamat@club-internet.fr), March 09, 2002.

I'll consider adding something like that in the future. For now, I messed up, and the Watch This Forum link isn't even there. I'll try to get that fixed soon, but I'm going to be away for most of the next two weeks :(

Personally, I think that defeats the purpose of a message board, if everything just gets emailed anyway...

JSW: Click on the "I forgot my password" link on the Login page, and your password will be emailed to you.
