Peter pepper seeds

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

When I was growing up I had a aunt that raised a pepper plant called "Peter Peppers". The peppers actually looked like a little boys pecker, except for being green in color. My aunt is no longer here and I have never seen anybody else who grows these so I was wondering if anybody else out there know where a fellow could find some seeds?

I believe Mother Earth News ran an article on them within the last year or so and listed sources. You may want to see if it's in their archives.

They are ubiquitious! Not many commercial seed companies carry it, but it is definately available through the Seed Saver's Exchange - a group of us semi-weird folks who are trying to save open-pollenated seeds that have been abandoned by the major seed companies in favor of the higher profits of hybrid seed. I will happily provide info on how to join SSV, as well as other sources, to anyone who is sincere in saving heirlooms. I also have a plethora of heirloom tomato seed. I had been asking for postage to send these, but I am wealthy enough to absorb the cost of 55 cents per envelope to send seeds to you other good folks. If it floats your boat, send me the postage. If not, and I really don't care - just send your snail-mail address and I will share my heirloom tomato seeds at no cost. Just tell me what types you want, or e-mail direct for more specific instructions. GL, your weird friend,

Seed Savers Exchange! A great organization and WELL worth the membership fees! It'll give you access to literally thousands of heirlooms of all kinds, some run-of-the-mill, but most interesting and different.

Pepper Joe's has the red ones as does Shumway's. They're gonna' be a bit expensive, about $3.50 for a dozen or less seeds, but that's the only place I've seen them except SSE.

For peter pepper seed, Alfrey's have always been the main supplier. For a packet of about 50 seeds, send $3.00 and a legal size SASE to: Alfrey Seed Co., PO Box 415, Knoxville, TN 37901. Request either red or yellow. The company will also send a list of other rare and odd hot peppers.
