Paint for Fertilizer Spreader??

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Have a funnel type 1000lb fertilizer spreader which needs re-painting. Although it has been shed kept and is only 6 yrs old it looks like it has been out in the rain for 20 years. After each use I rinse it with diesel fuel and have never washed it out with water. Anybody got any ideas on what type paint to use to counter act the fertilizer?

Thanks

the deisel is whats eating the paint of quicker. You will have to degrease it now,, before ANY paint will stick

Stan's correct. Diesel and gasoline are good at removing paint rather than preserving it. Clean with an alcohol based degreaser and sand down any rough spots. Then use a high gloss enamel paint, 2 or 3 coats. After use, possibly better to wash everything out with plain water but do it on a dry sunny day outside so that it dries thoroughly. Even if the spreader is stored in a shed, any residual fertilizer dust will pick up moisture from the air. Then the potash and phosphoric and sulfuric acids takes over and will eat through any ferrous metals. Even with a thick layer of enamel paint, watch for any "bubble" later which would indicate a nick which allows dust to get under the paint. If that happens, sand the area down and give it another thick layer of enamel paint.
