old tiller

i just recieved an old Monkey Ward Tiller with a 5 horse briggs and straton motor. well i cant get any spark from the thing. i took the coil off an took a wire brush to it and the spot on the flywheel it uses but i cant get any spark still. now can anyone tell me what the wire that comes from behind the flywheel is for i dont have a puller so i cant explore deeper yet just wondering what it does and if i might need to replace something back behind there? It was used last about 2 years ago so it did run at one point. its not a big thing if i dont get it running since i havent got anything invested in it.

Mike! The small wire goes to the points/condenser behind the flywheel. Ya'll'll need to remove the flywheel to check the points. More than likely they are stuck. I'd replace those points along with the condenser. They usually come together anyhow. Old hoot gibson. Matt.24;44

Mike, you can put the nut back on the shaft and tighten it until it is just flush with the shaft on the outer side. Now place pressure on the flywheel with a pry bar, then tap the end of the shaft/nut gently, tapping - not whacking. Often it will pop off without a puller. If you hit it too hard the threads will distort.

Cushion the end of the shaft with a piece of plastic or use brass to save thread distortion.
