Flash Portrait lighting Technique/Equipment advice needed

Hi Gang, I am looking for some help in setting up flash lighting for taking portraits and family photos. I own a 550EX flash and an EOS-3 camera body along with a couple lenses. My Problem. What other flash units should I purchase (220Ex, 380EX, . . . ) to utilize the equipment I have and how should I set them up for shooting portraits. I of course am not a professional but have been ask to photograph several families and individule portrates. Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks, jerry

I have the 420EX flash that I use on my 7E. The 420EX can be used as a slave flash with the 550EX as the master. This combo would create a wireless E-TTL multiflash setup. The 550EX is the master and controls the 420EX. You could also add the ST-E2, this would allow you to move both flashes off of the camera. I think the 420EX was about $200.

John's right. You need a 420EX or another 550EX to work as a wireless slave to what you have now. Or you can save a bit of money with a Sigma EF-500 Super. It's nearly a 550EX clone.
