Endurance ride in Oklahoma

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I'd like to let anyone interested in Endurance riding know of the first ride this year in the Central Region, The Okmulgee Cougar Prowl on March 9th. Ride website is Cougar Prowl and for general info about endurance riding go to AERC

This ride is easy terrain and you can choose a distance of 25 or 50 miles. Arrive Friday evening to vet in, camp and start the ride in the morning. Or, if you're real close, come EARLY Sat morning and vet in before the start, and they're off! I would be happy to answer any questions not covered in the websites--the more the merrier!

One day I would like to try Endurance. I have an Appie who is green broke and a Mustange hopefully up and coming. It just sounds like a lot of fun. There are a few groups here I believe.

Good Luck, be safe and have fun!

Oh, the good ol' days when I could endurance ride! Bad knees and ligament/tendonitis has confined me to just plain ol' trail riding, but I remember well those years (1988 to 1994) that I could put in over 500 miles of competion in one year on the same horse. Heck, I would train over 100 miles a week sometimes, no wonder I have have "lamness trouble" myself ;-).

Thanks for alerting the folks here to the current rides Debbie, there has got to be many trail riders out there ready to make the transition to some real competition with seriously good horses and riders. Endurance riding has some very special people in it, and it is the perfect family "sport"!

Sounds like fun, Debbie. But being in NY and not having a nearly fit enough horse yet, I'll have to pass. Except for Pooh, who is body clipped, the rest of my bunch still have full winter coats. We've got some early shows this year, and if Star continues to have no COPD/allergy symptoms, we'll be body clipping him soon. He gets so hairy he looks like a yak.

Oh these races are so much fun. I use to ride drag on them in Mount Shasta California. We had real rough terrain! Anyway for those of you that don't think you and your horse are in shape for the race but would like to be apart of it, get ahold of them and see if they have drag riders. That is what we did. They had every 10 miles set up for ridding drag. You just road the corse for you assined 10 miles to make sure somone didn't lose somthing or to pick up a horse and rider that got hurt or couldn't make it. Give them water and first aid. It lets you be apart of the race with out the endurance part kicking your butt! LOL
