What files on a Video CD?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

What files/folders should I see on a correctly-made Video CD that plays on a DVD player?

From other questions/threads I have seen in this forum, and from a commercial VCD from Hong Kong, it seems that the primary file (but not the only one)is a dat file. I've been trying to create a VCD from an avi file using TMPGEnc, and having done this several times, each time all I get is a single mpg file. Although this file plays fine in Windows Media Player, after burning it onto both CD-R and CD-RW discs, the discs will not play on my PC's (InterVideo WinDVD) or my DVD player (JVC-S60BK).

Thanks for any help you can provide.

You can't just burn the mpeg file onto a CD and have it in VCD- compliant format. There is a directory structure with support files needed for the standard. This explains why even WinDVD does not play it.

If you are using Nero, there is a VideoCD template that will burn a VideoCD playable on standalone players. Try CD-RW first as most use this and you can reuse it. CD-R's are coasters if they can't be played.

My suggestion: go to http://www.vcdhelp.com/ and click on "Author" on the left-hand side, under "How-To". This will give you information on how to create a proper VCD using one of many authoring/burning packages.

Robert:

Thanks very much for your response. I went to vcdhelp, printed the instructions for Nero, downloaded Nero, and used it to burn onto a CD- RW. The CD-RW played on both the home DVD player and the PC DVD player.
