TruthCafe- beware

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

What is this TruthCafe group that I got hit with? I got an e-mail invite and clicked on it--it is a Yahoo group--and just looked at some of the posts and decided it wasn't for me. I did NOT join. This morning my e-mail was full of about a hundred posts to this group. The reason I am writing this is that I saw a post on there from a regular on this board, and am wondering if that person is putting some of us down for invites. I warn you, if you are not into political/social debate, don't even go look. You might inadvertently sign yourself up! I couldn't hit unsubscribe fast enough! (They called me a Loser for unsubscribing--not an attitude that I enjoy)

Me too,,Ive been dealing with it for 2 days now,, now I just reply to them ALL, with a message ,,"remove me from this list",, its starting to take effect,, the emails are mentioning me and how to remove them,,but Ive follwoing the directions,, so hopefully,, someone WILL remove me

-- Stan (sopal@net-port.com), March 01, 2002.

Debbie, I got hit by them too!! If you just look at their site (you don't have to join) you will be overrun with their discussion group e- mails. Strange people!

-- cowgirlone in OK (cowgirlone47@hotmail.com), March 01, 2002.

And I thought I was the only one!!! I opened my box and it was filled to the brim with all sorts of wierd stuff. Someone has obviously visited one of these open forums and spamed us all. I saw cowgirlone and polly and others down as "members" when I checked it out last night and though it would be o.k. NOT!!! Yikes........won't click on one of those again unless someone that I personally know sends me the invite!!!

-- diane (gardiacaprines@yahoo.com), March 01, 2002.

I got it also. Only, I didn't go look, I simply deleted it.

-- Sissy Barth (iblong2Him@ilovejesus.net), March 01, 2002.

I received the "invite" also. Didn't go look, just deleted it. I didn't get hit with any messages this morning, but webtv strips a lot of garbage, so maybe that's why. If I do get hit with messages I think I'll try Stan's ingenious idea. :) Has anyone filed a complaint with yahoogroups?

-- Lenette (kigervixen@webtv.net), March 01, 2002.

I got caught too. Anyway at the bottom of their messages is an unsubscribe link. USE IT!!!! QUICK!

-- Don Armstrong (darmst@yahoo.com.au), March 01, 2002.

I got one also.

-- BC (desertdweller44@yahoo.com), March 01, 2002.

I went through the unsubscribe directions and received an e-mail that said I am "Un-subscribed" But the e-mails won't stop. I have filed a complaint with Yahoo. I hope it works!

-- cowgirlone in OK (cowgirlone47@hotmail.com), March 01, 2002.

How did you file the complaint with yahoo?? I keep getting them also, even though I got confirmation of my removal from the list.

-- diane (gardiacaprines@yahoo.com), March 01, 2002.

Diane, I went through yahoo help at the bottom of the page is a link that says "I unsubscribed but am still receiving mail" ( or something like that) If you click on that, it will show you a place to contact them. Best of luck!

-- cowgirlone in OK (cowgirlone47@hotmail.com), March 01, 2002.

I got an email from them, too. Went and checked it out since the email didn't decribe the group too well. I don't "do" politics so I just left the site and discarded the email. Haven't been hit at all with any posts from this group!

-- Marcia (HrMr@webtv.net), March 01, 2002.

Thank you folks for the warning. I got an invite too, but haven't done anything with it.

-- Laura (Ladybugwrangler@hotmail.com), March 01, 2002.

Thank goodness I deleted it without opening it! Was worried it was a virus or porn!

-- Ardie/WI (ardie54965@hotmail.com), March 01, 2002.

there might be a time delay. if that's not the prob go to 'your groups' & edit the membership to no emails while they fix it.

the link in my letter said 'click to join' so i did not click, i went independently to the site & looked it over. mr. dino [imperialist_infidel] must have pegged us all as a talkative/argumentive group that would add some spice to his forum...:)

-- bj pepper in C. MS. (pepper.pepper@excite.com), March 01, 2002.

the weird thing bj is that I DID edit my group thing and checked NO e- mail for all groups. I will try again. Maybe I did something wrong.

-- diane (gardiacaprines@yahoo.com), March 01, 2002.

I checked,, NO EMAILS also,, but that didnt stop,, Ive gone and edited MY Groups,, sayd I dont have any,, yet,, Im getting these emails

-- Stan (sopal@net-port.com), March 01, 2002.

O.K.........so I have reported it, checked my yahoo groups and they don't even show on it. (I subscribe to several ministry type groups) I have received more mail from them.........even though they don't even show. Guess I will just have to wait it out.........or perhaps start adding some MAJOR SPICE!!! LOL

-- diane (gardiacaprines@yahoo.com), March 01, 2002.

if you reply to those emails,, it WILL get their attention,, I have the moderator working on removeing me as I write this,,so ,, makeing waves does work

-- Stan (sopal@net-port.com), March 01, 2002.

I got an invite too. I took a look at their main page but decided not to subscribe because it was described as a high-volume list. I'm not getting any extra emails from them, thank goodness.

-- Sherri C in Central Indiana (CeltiaSkye@aol.com), March 01, 2002.

Me too, I never went to their site, so I haven't been flooded with e- mail. Just the initial invitation so far.

-- Terran in VT (homefire@sover.net), March 01, 2002.

I saw something on the news a week ago or so that when you UNSUBSCRIBE it does something so many groups/people gets your address. It said to just delete and don't unsubscribe. I don't know what to do anymore!

-- Ruth (W. WA) (dntwnna@yahoo.com), March 01, 2002.

I got that invite too, a few day ago. I just hit the wonderful delete button. I'm finding that the delete button, along with the called ID, and answering machine are becoming my good friends. It took me years to learn that if the phone rings I don't have to answer it, and if I answered it I didn't have to talk or listen. POWER I love the POWER of disconnecting from unwanted intrusions and I love exercising them on a regular basis.

-- Susan in Minnesota (nanaboo@paulbunyan.net), March 01, 2002.

Yea! The e-mails have stopped!!

-- cowgirlone in OK (cowgirlone47@hotmail.com), March 01, 2002.

Thanks for the heads up on this one. I just got the invite and trashed it. Were it not for you folks, I might have opened it and been in the same boat. I get enough junk as it is; I don't need any more.

-- Fran (on MD's Eastern Shore) (simpleplesurzfrm@dmv.com), March 01, 2002.

Thanks, ya'll for the warning. I hadnt checked my email for a while. Had to go check it since I saw this thread. Yep, there it was just waiting for me. Deleted it immediately... THANKS AGAIN!

-- daffodyllady (daffodyllady@yahoo.com), March 01, 2002.

I got one too. I opened mine but didn't open the site. I deleted it and haven't gotten any e-mails. I hope I won't be hearing any further from them.

-- Sheryl in NJ (all295@aol.com), March 01, 2002.

lucky folks :>( ...........hours later and at least 65 e-mails and they still won't stop. I am not kidding, wish I was. I have finally resorted to putting a block sender on each new poster to the group and the number is deminishing.

-- diane (gardiacaprines@yahoo.com), March 01, 2002.

If the blocking options and filters don't work then you might look at where Ken had outlined the procedure for sending an abuse report to an internet provider in an earlier post.

General information from PC World on spam, is that when you use the unsubscribe option you verify your email address and this can cause you can end up even more spam after they sell your this information to others, provided they do this and they recommend looking at these links: Coalition Against Unsolicited Commercial e-mail, www.cauce.org, www.cauce.org , Spam Cop, spamcop.net, and JunkBusters, www.junkbusters.com

Hope this helps.

-- BC (desertdweller44@yahoo.com), March 01, 2002.

Thanks for letting us know, y'all! I just saw this one in my inbox, so sent an abuse report to abuse@yahoo.com ~ just forwarded the e- mail to them with a note that apparently this guy is harvesting e- mails from forums.

-- Wingnut (wingnut@moment.net), March 01, 2002.

peace in the valley at last. Thanks for the help folks, it finally stopped. Not sure what worked. The only stuff I am getting now is from our friend misty defending gloria. Aaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh..the joys of forum participation. Wouldn't want to miss out on all the neat people I have met though, so I guess I will stick around. Take care all.

-- diane (gardiacaprines@yahoo.com), March 01, 2002.

Boy, I'm the lucky one, I never got any. I always just delete everything like that anyway. I have never joined any email group. Thanks for the warning though, I'll keep an eye out for em.

-- Cindy in KY (solidrockranch@msn.com), March 01, 2002.

Thank-you for all of this advice--I had been working on trying to get unsubscribed since yesterday--but could not even get the mail out of my box to them--it also has suddenly stopped for me--not sure how or why--but good to know I was not the only one!

-- Lynn in Wa (crabbyfiddler@earthlink.net), March 01, 2002.

Debbie, I had the same thing happen to me as well, it took me three hours to finally get unsubscribed and the e-mails to STOP!

I had e-mailed their moderator and finally got the stuff to stop appearing in my inbox, geez, the mail kept coming like the magic water bucket people in the "Soccerer's Apprentice"!!!!

I am so glad I was not the only one tearing their hair out over this mess!

-- Annie Miller in SE OH (annie@1st.net), March 02, 2002.

ohh, sorry ms.diane!

i'm glad you got the 'magicked broomsticks' to stop tho. there were over 400 messg on that group for the first two days of march alone! wowsers a fri & sat! they obviously don't have any fenceline to check! :O or broccoli to plant, or sand to add to a shallot bed or, heck, i need to finish lunch & get on getting on.

-- bj pepper in C. MS. (pepper.pepper@excite.com), March 02, 2002.

I sure learned a big lesson!!! I usually delete from anyone I don't know, but the truth of the matter is that I participate on several forums and there has been talk about backups etc. and I really thought that was what it was. So please, if anyone actually wants to invite me to a backup forum................be sure you identify yourself because I sure would never VISIT another one. LOL

-- diane (gardiacaprines@yahoo.com), March 02, 2002.

By clicking the link on the "truth cafe" invite you joined an email list. Not their fault. The invite (which I deleted on reciept) was clear as to what it was, an email list. A list is a wonderful place to hang out if you find one that is compatable with your intrests. I have met many people through one I belong to. I have had a family from France come and stay a week with me just because they belong to the same list as I. We now spend our vacations with the people on that same list (members number 2000+) Yes, active lists generate much email. If you use the email alert on this forum it is very similar only you can not respond directly to the emails here.

By responding to each and every email with an email stating you wish to unsubscribe is not the way to go. You have to send a note to the unsub address usually. Look around, the directions on any list on how to unsub are easy to find. These people are not being rude by sending you what you ordered, you are by not taking the time to send the correct message.

-- Diana (dvance4@juno.com), March 02, 2002.

Diana, it always best to know of what you speak. I followed the protical EXACTLY, as did others, and was not removed until I contacted Yahoo. I belong to several e-groups, like what you speak of, I routinely unsubscribe and resubscribe from them when I leave the country. NEVER had a problem. This was different, very different. I guess you just had to be there.

-- diane (gardiacaprines@yahoo.com), March 02, 2002.

If anyone else is curious about this group, why not do what I did. I went to Yahoo groups from the home page and from there went to Truthcafe. Since I didn't click onto the link in the email, I never got any spam. Then I just discarded the email. Worked for me :-)!!

-- Marcia (HrMr@webtv.net), March 02, 2002.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/truthcafe/?yguid=88756845

I went here and clicked on leave group and it says I have successfully. but we'll see . . .
