How to add something green inside.

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Country Families : One Thread

Following Cathy N's. good suggestion to start my own thread, I offer the following:

I was admiring a friend's houseplant today and noticed all this grass-like greenery growing at the base of the plant. When I asked her what that was, she replied "Grass!" She said she disliked the look of bare dirt in her houseplants so she scattered a handful of grass seed and the results was really nice. I think I'll try that with some of my plants that are tall and not very bushy.

Wishing you enough.

Sounds neat! I agree, I don't like to see dirt in pots either.

Dianne----I have 4 cockteals----& when I empty their food dishes--- with the hulls--etc/etc/--- I empty it into the top of my plants----& what good seeds are left in there--grows--- & when it grows I fed the greens to the birds--so they get fed both- & I have new greens growing with my houseplants also----I also empty their bath water in the top of my plants-- & it gives fertilizer to my plants also!! RECYCLE--RECYCLE!!!! HA/!

Great idea, Sonda. I do the same thing with my fish water. Seems to give the plants an added boast. This same fish spends the summer outside in our rain barrel and that water gets put on my outside barrels. Every little bit helps.

Wishing you enough.

Just be aware that the grass will be in competition with the plant for nutrients in the soil..you may have to add extra goodies to make up for it.

We have grown oats in a container and the house cats like to chew on them. We started a routine each evening, so they sit like good little kitties and wait for me to set the dish on the floor. Mostly, they rub their face through it.
