greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

What used have you for Pecan shells. We put them under a bird feeder and the birds pick out the remaining pecan. Are they good for mulch in a flower bed? I know not to use them where they will be walked on as they do stain. Thanks.

I dump mine in the middle of my fig tree since mulch is so important to figs. I imagine they could be dumped in the center of just about any bush or tree as a mulch. Usually the crows will come & pick through the shells for tidbits of nut left.

We've been steadily working our way through shelling about fifty pounds of pecans and the shells go into the hen yard. They pick out any bits of kernel we missed and the rest ends up in the litter where it eventually gets used in the garden or around some planting or other.

They can also be used to produces dyes or stains for clothing, gunstocks and the like.

Grind them fine and use them to tumble brass or as bedding.

Ground nut shells can be used in a bead blaster to polish hard woods also, such as picture frames or decorative items. A bead blaster is a cabinet of sorts that uses compressed air to siphon up the medium to spray a solid object for the purpose of cleaning, removing paint, ect.

When You BBQ add them to the coals for the pecan smoke flavor.

God Bless.

I keep my hulls in a five gallon bucket for use during ice storms to control loss of traction due to ice on my porch instead of salt.
