doe had hard labor-triplets

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Dairygoats : One Thread

My second kidding --the first presentation was upside down and backwards- if that makes sense. Anyway it was a buck kid quite large and he didn't make it, by the time I had him turned and out. Two does followed, both doing fine. I am a little worried about my momma. She had a hard day. She has eaten some grain, had a bucket of warm mollases water, and a shot of penicillen(since I had to go in). What should I look for to make sure she recovers well, and is not injured or infected etc. Also she is not too interested in the babies tonite, I am hoping she is just tired. Anyway I am out to barn again then off to bed for me too! I am exhausted...

Oh, Terri, I'm sorry to hear about the little buck, and hope your doe will be ok. I've got one doe that is HUGE, walking around like a little barrel with feet. She had triplets before I got her, so probably will have them again. I'm excited, but dreading it, too! Good luck, and keep us posted on how she's doing. Jan

It sound slike she is doing OK, but its what you cannot see that may be the problem. By that I mean any internal damage. If she si torn or ripped she would not be eating and down. i ahd a doe las tyr, well, 2 for that matter that died from the internal injuries. Both ahd hard labors. I would suggest the penacillain as you gave her and maybe an infusion of tomorrow into her vagina to be safe. That would stop any infections.

If she is eating and drinking that is a good sign. If not watch for a swelled vulva, reddish or hot to touch, walking stiff legged, laying down a lot, ears at half mast. Take her temp to make sure she is OK, normal temp is about 102 degrees. Hope this ehlps.

And I would also suggest that the penicillin be given at least once daily for another 5 or 6 days...one injection won't be enough. Give Probios every day or every other day as well until the antibiotic treatment is through - it'll keep the rumen going and perk up her appetite. I hope she starts to perk up for you. :) patty Prairie Oak Miniatures http://www.minifarm.com/prairie_oak

On the front page of the forum, there is a link at the top on the page, on the left hand side, that says 'ask a question'. Click on that and you can start a new post.
