Raising chickens and rabbits without buying feed?

I got this idea from Ken S.'s Croatian relatives. Do any of you do this? What do you grow? How do you store it for winter?

I raise rabbits, but I don't do it completely without feed. I feed a small amount of pellets, and then supplement that with lots of grasses and weeds that grown in our pasture. They also get good quality hay. During the winter months, they just get pellets and hay. My rabbits do VERY well on this, and I'm looking forward to spring when we can go raid the pasture for them again! If you are switching their feed, you do have to do so slowly, however. I've heard that too much "green food" for a rabbit that's not used to it can cause diarrhea, and you could lose the rabbit. I've never had a problem with it, but I've read about others who have.

By the way - feeding them fresh grasses really improves their flavor as well!

Hi, I found a way to really cut down on the feed bill-bought 50 pounds of whole corn for $4.25. Roto tilled a 50 by 50 foot area next to the chicken pen and one by the rabbit pen. Sprinkled about ten pounds of corn on each area and let it grow for about three weeks-now I go out and jerk up a couple of armloads of corn plants and throw it to the chickens, also give the rabbits each a stock of of corn, then sprinkle more corn seed in the area I pulled up. This has cut my feed bill in half and the animals love it. Daryll
