EOS 1 Focusing screen

Help!!!!Took out the focusing screen of my EOS 1 to blow away some dirt and can't seem to fit it so that it can focus. When looking through the viewfinder the focus points seem blurred, the aperture etc characters on the bottom horizontal are also unclear. The image doesn't focus sharply. Can someone please help, as I have a shoot tomorrow. Thanks. John Michael.

Canon makes and insertion tool that makes it fairly easy to remove and insert without damaging anything. It comes with any optional screen that you might want to buy. Not that that helps you with your shoot tomorrow.

I played around with a screen from an older EOS 630 once and that took several tries to get it back right without the insertion tool. I resorted to turning the camera upside down to get it right.

John,

How did you remove it? Did you use the little tool Canon provides with it focus screens or did you do it manual (with your fingers)? Seems to me that it didn't snap back into the right position. Are you sure you did place it in the camera the right way?

Guys, I did it manually, ie. I held back the protruding clip and I gently nudged out the screen. When I try to drop back the screen into the housing frame, click it back, it doesn't seem to locate itself - it's blurred through the viewfinder, it appeared quite simple at first - HELP! Thanks John Michael

John!

It's possible to snap it in without a tool. I just tried it using my old Eos-1. When you look into your camera through the lens mount make sure the little plastic "nose" of the focusing screen is left of the big snap that holds everything in place. Then gently press it into position. That's it.

Good Luck!

Martin, Thanks for your prompt response. Holding the camera such that I'm looking down onto the screen housing, the " nose" is left of the snap mechanism, and it does seem to fit and snap gently back. However, I still have a misty looking viewfinder, and it won't focus properly. I wiil admit that I didvery gently brush both sides of the screen wih a fine lens brush. Would this have any effect? John,

I'm confused. The misty looking viewfinder could be because of not correct diopter settings. But the auto focus should still work correct. Do you have the feeling that the auto focus is not working because the image in the viewfinder is not sharp when the AF indicator states that it's in focus? If yes, I guess you messed around with the diopter setting on the back of the camera left of the viewfinder protected under the rubber eye....(sorry, no idea how you call this in english).

Martin!

Many thanks for your observation. You were absolutely right. I reset and seems I'm back in business. I think I'll get a new screen, now that I can replace it easily, and since I put some minor marks on this one. By the way, is it easy to have the glass, onto which the screen sits, be replaced easily by a technician? Would this increase the accuracy/sharpness of the focus facility? Thanks for your threads, Martin John
