Spring is coming. Cranes are gathering at the refuge

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Freedom! self reliance : One Thread

Went by the wildlife refuge on my way back from Louisville today and saw a HUGE flock, or several flocks of Sandhill cranes just flying around in circles. I love to here that goofy noise they make. Won't be long now.

John, did you watch the channel 12 forecast from Cincinnati? www.theweaterauthority.com :~} Now what were you saying?

Yup. There are frogs out here already!!! I think they will need to go back into hiding, but they were singing away the night before last. I LOVE spring!!! I wish it were spring all the time-but wait, then I wouldn't appreciate it so much, would I??? Well, Spring 75% of the time would still be greatly appreciated!

Folks, couldn't we please let the water mocasins and the mosquitoes sleep just a little bit longer.

Cindy, We only get 2 TV stations. 3 on a good day. Yeah, I heard the weatherman from the Louisville radio say were gonna get some cold. But I'm encouraged anyway. Those cranes know that whatever cold front we're gonna be getting isn't gonna last.

Heck, It's still winter. Tho you wouldn't really know it. A little winter weather to end the season with is no big deal. Right?

Skeeters and Water moccasins! We've got plenty of the first and very few of the moccasins I'm happy to say. My youngest boy thinks he's Steve the croc hunter when it comes to wild stuff. The less of the poisonous things the better. He gets into enough now.

My good friend lives outside Houston in a fancy subdivision area. There are canals all running through it. It had been raining a bunch in the spring when I visited. There were angry Moccasins all over, who'd been flooded out of their holes. I got chased by one and ended up jumping up onto the hood of his pickup! That thing came from way accross the yard to get after me! Think it knew I was a yankee maybe?

sigh...for the last three weeks I have been watching the lizards running all up and down the trees...hmm, to me, this isn't "Spring" it is "snakes are coming " weather. I hate snakes..all snakes big and small...the first critter here to greet us two years ago from PA was a very dead rattlesnake in the driveway...I think we ran him over with the truck..the same day I met a 6 foot long Rat snake and several really fast-moving Black snakes....neighbors have huge problems with copperheads (over 30 in a year) but we haven't seen any on our property..they probably heard me screaming and moved on.
