Looks like the terrorists won...

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unk's Troll-free Private Saloon : One Thread

No, not bin Laden and al-Quaida. I meant the terrorists who shut down Unk's Wild, Wild West. Unk's seems to have lost critical mass during the switch to a password-protected forum. Lars tries. God knows Lars tries. But something changed and not for the better.

I do lurk here for a short time each day, but the fire is not in my belly. It's about time I admitted that. I know the prescribed solution is to introduce a killer thread where we can all make a hubbub like old times. Sorry.

What was it Dandy Don Meredith used to sing in the waning minutes of a Monday Night Football game? It's right on the tip of my tongue...

I agree Nip.

First, we have lost attendance here and it just isn’t any fun sparring with 2 or 3 people over and over.

Second, there is no focal point for the sides to rally around like…… oh say Y2K.

However, I fail to see how the password requirement has kept certain ‘personalities’ from participating. I offer as an example the multiple identity poster that frequently signs as ‘LOL’, or some other such intelligent handle. Personally, I miss the good old rantings that used to be an everyday occurrence.

Plus, it’s fun to guess who some of the current posters ‘used’ to be.

Like you for instance.

Socrates: It is my sincere belief that "LOL" is none other than LL, who somehow sneaked under Unk's radar.

-- Mr. Keene (Tracer@OfLost.Poopheads), February 21, 2002.

Or maybe LL sent Unk an email requesting the password. Just like the rest of us.

-- (cin@cin.cin), February 21, 2002.

Or maybe it is Unk hisself.

Think about it……..

-- So (cr@t.es), February 21, 2002.

Soc, I thought YOU were LL!

Will the REAL LL please stand up

-- who knew (I@kinda.did), February 21, 2002.

Of course, some of us just lurk and not say anything...

Lurkin' in the dark... (GRRRR...)

‘Who knew’, I thought you knew that I know who LL is and isn’t.

-- So (cr@t.es), February 21, 2002.

It's my fault. Ever since I trashed Anita, she isn't posting much, and it's my fault. I was tired and pissed off and I shouldn't have done it. It felt pretty good for the first five minutes, but then the adrenalin pooped out and I realized what I'd done and nothing will ever fix it. Ever since then things just wound down. I'm sorry.

-- helen (mea@culpa.mea.culpa), February 21, 2002.

I thought that there were only three people who posted on the board anyway. After all this time you decide to tell me that there were more?

-- Jack Booted Thug (governmentconspiracy@NWO.com), February 22, 2002.

I don't know which one is LL, but one thing is for sure, Socrappy sure is an asshole! Anonymous or not, this forum would be a much better place without jerks like him.

-- (just say no @ to. rude assholes), February 22, 2002.

Maybe if Unk would let DIetER in we could have some fun.

I can't help it if there is so much hapening in the government that needs to be known......maybe we could name that thing?

-- Cherri (jessam5@home.com), February 22, 2002.

Helen, I don't think you had anything to do with Anita's infrequent postings. (Of course I could be wrong) But Anita wouldn't let that little lashing stop her from posting; she's lets it roll off her back. But it is curious why she stopped posting. She used to be so prolific. I thought she never slept, just stayed online.

LN, I agree that this new place isn't like the old place but I feel it has more to do with 9-11 than password protection. Also the liberals are just stunned that Bush is the greatest president of all time.

That should get you going :)

-- Maria (anon@ymous.com), February 22, 2002.

Stop with the guilt, Helen. You KNOW that's MY job. [geez...woman is always trying to take away my titles.]

The truth is that since SO came home from an out-of-state contract, he's been in need of the PC for networking, etc. Sharing a PC wasn't easy for me at first, but just having him home has given me an impetus to do other things IRL that I'd neglected while living the "single" life. In addition, my kids all now have E-mail accounts and expectations SOAR when it comes to "hearing from mom" every day. So, my online time is drastically reduced in favor of sharing and IRL pursuits, the time I DO have online is spread out further, AND, I haven't found much of interest here of late.

Cute joke at the end there, Maria.

-- Anita (Anita_S3@hotmail.com), February 22, 2002.

Anita, you say there isn't that much interesting here, yet I note the irony of this post being directly above "The Outrage of Cow Bingo" on the new answers page.

-- Peter Errington (petere@starpower.net), February 22, 2002.

And one more thing, Anita, by your absence, I believe you missed your chance to participate in a classic made-for-Anita thread, where people expounded at length on "what really burns my ass."

-- Peter Errington (petere7@starpower.net), February 22, 2002.

Maria, some times I really wonder about your sanity, but then I realised you were being humorous. By the way, do you know the name of GW's favorite book?

-- Cherri (jessam5@home.com), February 23, 2002.

Returning to the thread's topic, yes this forum is dying a slow (but accelerating) death. I don't think it will last to the next presidential election.

We need more people, by a factor of 3 or 4. How to get there, I don't know? I emailed one former poster, a playful gal that everyone liked. She said she had emailed Unk for the password but received no answer. She didn't seem too shook up about it, like maybe she was getting tired of this place anyhow. Still, I was tempted to give her the password but did not; I am not worthy. Unk you are a busy guy and I don't envy a Sysop but if we are losing contributors because their letters are not being answered, maybe you should ask for help.

-- (lars@indy.net), February 23, 2002.

I vote for Lars for back-up sysop, if necessary. Both you guys are tops.

-- Oxy (Oxsys@aol.com), February 23, 2002.

Cherri, isn't it more a matter of Unk letting DiETer out? :-)

As for this forum dying... Sigh . I come here mostly because the Nuts at the Fruitcake Resistance League are getting quieter and quieter. I think it's a case of real life causing interference with the virtual... I know that's how it goes for me.

-- Tricia the Canuck (jayles@telusplanet.net), February 24, 2002.

LOL! I don't know who LOL is now, but I used to be LOL, and I have never been LL. Haven't posted here in a long time because the "regulars" only talk to each other and pretty much leave "outsiders" on permanent plonk. Not a very welcoming environment.

-- (those were@the.days), February 24, 2002.

" Lars for back-up sysop, "?

I don't know. I used to enjoy backing up naked into doorknobs. Does that count?

-- (lars@indy.net), February 24, 2002.

Lars:

I don't know. I used to enjoy backing up naked into doorknobs. Does that count?

After basketball, that is the second most common source of entertainment in Indiana. I heard that the governor wanted to offer it as an Olympic sport [winter of course, with cold doorknobs]. ;o)))

Best Wishes,,,,,

Z, go ahead and mock. We will have the last laugh when it is included in the 2006 winter Olympics. (the doorknob must be icy)
