How to build hunting beagle kennel?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Does anyone have building plans or knowledge on building a hunting dog kennel? I have a 8 week old beagle and it is time we get building on an outdoor, of the ground dog kennel for him. I heard 1x2 fencing for floor but also heard it causes their feet to spread making webbed feet? Thank you!

My family has been raising beagles for many years. We have tried everything for above ground floors. The best material yet is to use treated wood with about a 1 to 1 1/2 inch space between them. With the space between them you can take a rake or water hose and remove all of the waste matter down thru the cracks.

Hi, we like cement for flooring and use a sealer on it. The chainlink fence posts are set right in the cement. Safe, clean and of course the tops are covered too. LQ

My kennel area is half wood and half dirt, for each of my dogs I have a enclosed 10' x 16' fence with gate and inside each area I have a 6' x 8' raised wood floor built on 4" x 4" treated post where their dog house sits and then the rest of kennel is dirt. And every 2 years I move the kennels to a new spot so that the old spot can regroup. My dogs are not beagles but sled dogs and they like the dirt part in the summer time because its cool and softer then concrete or the wood floor.

Cast concrete or river pebble base is what we've used for our Spaniels. I'd go with concrete for the beagle, they like to hunt a little too much! Our pens are chainlink but we used to have 2x4's with welded 2x4 garden wire stapled to it. They worked well too.

I have this friend who can build anything with wood. She built this really cool chicken coop for me once. She would help you as thats her nature..... : ) : )
