50 State Quilt Block Placement

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Hi, I recently aquired 50 embroidered blocks each with a U.S. state, bird and flower. The woman who did these went into a retirement home and her son was going to throw these out. My mother in law and I are trying to piece this together to enter in in the fair this summer in the womans name. Is there anyone who has seen these done? Know of any internet links? The blocks are rectangle 8" x 11"

thanks, Jennifer

Jennifer, I don't think that there is any particularly "right" way to do it. I have seen them done by alphabet, by the order they became states, randomly, etc. I would think that if you laid them out in a way that was pleasing to the eye for you, it would be great. Sorry, don't know of a web site for this particular quilt.

Would they by chance kind of fit together like the actual arrangements of the states?

Jennifer, start here, see if someone on this forum can help.( http://www.quiltfriends.com/) Also, the Kansas City Star has a quilting site, don't have the addy, sorry. Run them down and see what is happening there. I would also get on the web to online fabric sites (Like Keepsake Quilting etc) Many of these people post on forums re quilting. Good luck, have fun. The main thing you want to do is make your additions to these blocks precise and follow good quilting rules. Accurate seams, impeccable backing, batting and binding. http://www.quiltfriends.com/ Let us know what happens! :-) LQ
