Surface problems with T Max

greenspun.com : LUSENET : B&W Photo - Film & Processing : One Thread

I recently started processing my TMax in a Paterson orbital processor. It had worked well for Fp4 but since using TMax I have had a problem with a grid effect left on the non emulsion side matching the groove pattern that I had put on the bottom of the processor. It looks like crinkle varnish finish between the channels - possibly where the negatives 'stick' to the base of the processor. Its invisible when the negatives are wet.

Chemistry is PMK. I switched at the same sort of time to PMK from perceptol so it could be the chemistry and some weird edge effect but I wouldnt have expected that on the non-emulsion side.

I have tried re-fixing in a deep tank but cant get rid of the effect. Any thoughts as to what this might be and how to get rid of the problem ?

Its very reproducable :-(

Thanks

Dave

David,

It sounds like it is time for some controled experiments. I would guess that you are using TMX, although you don't say so. I also assume that you are talking about sheets. Try developing a few sheets without the Paterson. Just use a tray with continuous agitation. You can also try the Paterson with a different developer.

One other thing: The TMax films do not stain well in PMK. You may want to try another combination anyway.

Thanks for the reply, I have been using TMAX 100. Interestingly the effect doesnt show in the finished print so I am not going to worry too much. I have used tanks with TMAX and not had the problem. I have ordered a new processor without scoring to retest. I scored the bottom of the tank after taking advice on getting rid of the blue stain in TMAX post fix. I had hoped that I could wash in some solution or other to get rid of the problem but it appears not.

Thanks

Dave
