KoA3 Poll

greenspun.com : LUSENET : MAME Action Replay : One Thread

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, we are indeed planning KoA3 (or Knockout 3, or MAME Championships 2; whatever you want to call it) for MARP. However, before we go into too much planning, we'd like to know your opinion on a matter.

What version of MAME would you like to use; TG MAME (which is .35tg3b, which is in the .35 cycle), .36 Final, or the latest version of MAME that is out during the competition?

Pros ----

TG MAME - .35 cycle, which runs faster than later versions on slow PCs; was officially developed by Twin Galaxies, so the inps are secure.

.36 Final - Since it was the last true final from MAME, it's the most stable; has wider selection of games than TG MAME; ports to OSes other than PC.

Latest version - Widest game selection of all.

Cons ----

TG MAME - Old version, so selection is smaller compared to other versions.

.36 Final - Slower than TG MAME; also has possible NVRAM issues (not a real con when it comes to the anti-NVRAM rules at MARP, but info never the less).

Latest version - Similar to .36 Final, but is slower than .36 Final.

Results will be used in KoA3. This poll will follow the rules of MARP voting, which means this will last for seven (7) days. The majority vote will be used. Please choose only one, for heaven's sake :)

I vote for the Mame35tg version. After all we want a secure mame and this is the only one we have so far.

Cheers

What we really need is a more recent TGMAME. 0.35 is woefully out of date, and runs poorer than the recent Win32 builds on my system. I vote for the latest MAME version (whatever it may be at the time), unless a more recent TG version appears.

TG MAME version , more up to date if possible .

Latest version, unless a new TG MAME appears.

-- Joe Ledesma (JoeyL21988@yahoo.com), February 16, 2002.

TG MAME.

I fear that if the vote goes that we'll use the newest version of MAME that some players including me would have to drop out because a game comes up that needs a fast PC. This is not fair I think. Just my opinion.

Bye.

I vote for Mametg3. I remenber when I joined MARP 6 months ago and loaded a giant recording {Mame36b5} but didn't count or playback because of mvram issues.Big headache. Be nice to have tg3 for Mame56-58?

-- Phil Younger (robot5001@aol.com), February 17, 2002.

I vote to use the latest MAME version. Changing those configurations and default settings each time you switch versions is just a pain in the proverbial.

-- LordGaz (garyjlee@hotmail.com), February 17, 2002.

The nvram issue is easy to solve for the latest version, just delete or temporarily rename the nvram directory.

-- LordGaz (garyjlee@hotmail.com), February 17, 2002.

Latest Mame !! Need i say more :)

(1) There's a .37b9 TG version, as well - but it's only under MAME32.

(2) WTF happened to Ben Jos and his Tournament Edition version of MAME?

(3) I vote for, not the latest version, but .56 (which seems to be the least buggy of the most recent versions... if they'd stayed on the old version numbering scheme, it probably would have been .37 final).

-- dissolute city (mdenham@coinet.com), February 18, 2002.

M36final...for the game selection.

Later tg-mame not good, if it's only for Windows. I can kill mouse acceleration completely in pure DOS, which is good assumably. Latest versions are daaaamn buggy.

And hey!...choose only classic eighties games!

-- TJT (tiihoto@spammee.hotmail.com), February 18, 2002.

I've been advised in the past not to use m37b9tg due to issues out of my control (that's why back in Deca2001, we had to revert back to m35tg3b); so this version is not allowed during KoA3.

I vote for MAME .36 final.

-- Kale (angelo.salese@tin.it), February 18, 2002.

Well, the week has passed, and oh boy...somehow I knew it would end up in a tie :) 4 ties for both TG MAME and latest version, and that's counting Denham's vote for a different section altogether.

What's that mean? Redo! Wooo!!!!

This poll will be a week long, and the only options to choose from are TG MAME or latest version. Choose wisely! :)

Oh yay!

Latest version, no point in missing out on half the games in MAME now.

Mervel vs. Capcom in KoA3 plz! ;)

-- Barry Rodewald (bsr@hnpl.net), February 23, 2002.

And obviously I can't spell. :/

This board needs an 'edit post' function.

-- Barry Rodewald (bsr@hnpl.net), February 23, 2002.

TGMAME. Since not all of us have computers that run the newer versions of MAME all that well.

TG mame

QRS

-- QRS (qrs@telia.com), February 24, 2002.

Once again.

LATEST MAME !

THOUGH IF YOU COUNT THE LATEST NANE(56) VOTE, LATEST MAME SHOULD BEEN CHOSEN.

Stig

-- Stig Remnes (sremnes@hotmail.com), February 24, 2002.

True, Stig, but alas, he didn't vote for latest MAME; he specifically stated so:

"I vote for, not the latest version, but .56 "

I might as well finally vote myself; I vote for TG MAME.

35tg for the moment

but I'm still dreaming for a more recent tg version ; who can do that ? mark, benjos ? please ... there is a lot of games we all would like to play in future tourneys, not only m35 games ...

-- phil (plamat@club-internet.fr), February 24, 2002.

Maybe, if possible, it would be possible to compile a special mame for the KOA3? That way, it's speedy for the slower computer users, but we still get to play any game currently supported by MAME. Just a thought, maybe someone (myself even?) would be willing to do so, or even as a group thing.

-- Joe Ledesma (JoeyL21988@yahoo.com), February 24, 2002.

Scratches head, I do have a later TG Mame edition than 35 final....

It was made/compiled as of 37b9...

I hate to be redundant, but to point out above:

"I've been advised in the past not to use m37b9tg due to issues out of my control (that's why back in Deca2001, we had to revert back to m35tg3b); so this version is not allowed during KoA3."

Latest MAME, it works better for and fast enough for me on this 333Mhz machine and the display is crisp. Just have to fiddle about with some of the advanced settings a bit, ticking the stretching option actually brings some games up to 100% speed. Win36 had crackly sound too.

-- LordGaz (garyjlee@hotmail.com), February 24, 2002.

Joey, intresting suggestion. How will you make it faster ?

Stig

-- Stig Remnes (sremnes@hotmail.com), February 24, 2002.

By re-compiling it with only the selected games and corresponding drivers, and changing the source code to reflect, I believe it should run faster. I'm not 100% sure, but the more games/drivers/code added to MAME makes it run slower, and by removing the unnecessaries for the tourney would make it run faster. That is my theory, it is possible that I could be wrong.

-- Joe Ledesma (JoeyL21988@yahoo.com), February 24, 2002.

The number of game drivers aren't what slow down MAME, other than maybe making the executable ever so slightly larger, requiring more RAM (the MAME exe is 12MB as it is), but on straight CPU power, it doesn't.

-- Barry Rodewald (bsr@hnpl.net), February 24, 2002.

What does make MAME slower then? And would recompiling a much smaller version of MAME make it run faster?

-- Joe Ledesma (JoeyL21988@yahoo.com), February 24, 2002.

Compile a smaller version of MAME exists already in source and it's called "Tiny" compile.Unluckly you will gain speed ONLY in compiling MAME even if you delete/comment the lines that you don't need. The slowdowns are caused by new features added in MAME that normal users can't see but they are needed for reaching Arcade perfect status. Some examples are new REGION_CPU/REGION_GFX added in the rom loading
(The first example that come up in mind is Tetris Plus 2;the sprite priority was fixed thanks to a new REGION_GFX,it means more accuracy but also more power needed)
,new graphic emulated effects(raster effects in neogeo/Irem m92 drivers),
or better sound(Without stereo or Dolby sound it "should" gain some power),
and better cpu emulation.

For returning in the main thing of this thread,i will vote for lastest MAME,because nobody here wants to do a tournament with "CPU- eater" games like "Street Fighter:The Movie",and I will not see any particular CPU-demanding problem in Z80/M68K based games in it...

-- Kale (angelo.salese@tin.it), February 25, 2002.

TGMAME. nough said. GB9

-- Gameboy9 (goldengameboy@yahoo.com), March 01, 2002.

Wow, this is a bit late :) First of all, the poll has been closed since Saturday, but since the last vote was on Friday, we've got no problems.

The final count:

TGMAME - 5 votes Current - 3 votes

Whenever KoA3 comes around, TGMAME will be used. Thank you all for your input on this matter, and see you in the competition!

Hey! Plus one vote for 36final :)

When will it start then?

-- TJT (tiihoto@nospam.hotmail.com), March 05, 2002.

So far, it looks like a good time might be somewhere around May or so. That's not definite, though. That still leaves Aqua plenty of time for T6.
