Where to buy bees ?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Hi, I have done searches for packaged bee sources and not am not having a lot of luck. I live in Oklahoma and would desperately like to try and start 1 regular hive and 1 observation hive. Do you have favorite sources for packaged bees? Is time running really short for me to get them reserved/ordered? Thank you all so, so much for all your help, Alicia

got a copy of any bee magazines? there are TONES in those thiungs,, you can also do a search for "packaged beed" or "beekeeping" you'll find alot there also. ANy other beekeepers in your area? see if you can buy a split,, or buy a package from them.

Check with your state ag department to see if they have a bee inspector. The postoffice isn't deleivering bees the way they used to. It is best to find a local supplier who has arranged transport for the nucs.

Hi Alica,

I am glad to hear you have an interest in the amazing bee. I do not know what part of the OK state you are in but I do know of 8 or 9 bee associations across the state. Go to this web site for name locations and address.

Also a very good site to read is this one.

Why my list come out like this? thats not how i typed it

-- Mike in KS (mhonk@kscable.com), February 16, 2002.

In a catalog I got last week, the company stated that USPS is only accepting bee package shipments within 4 shipping zones of the apiary that is selling/shipping the bees. I live in Maine so I don't know the apiaries in your area, but you would do well to find someone locally to buy bees from as restrictions tend to get tighter with time, not more lenient. You would also do well looking into mite- resistant breeds, such as the Russians (there are other breeds also that have been bred for this purpose). An excellent choice would be finding someone who captured a feral swarm last year and could sell you a package off of them. Those bees would in all probability be mite resistant (since the mites have wiped out most feral hives) and would also be used to your micro-climate and nectar/pollen offerings. Good luck...beekeeping is great fun!

mr. mike,

you have to put an extra [space]line between paragraphs or sentences in a list to get them to align instead of clump up together into one giant paragraph.

ex: list1 [hit enter]

list2

list 3
