What makes a place called a "farm" a farm? What makes a place called a "ranch" a ranch?? just pondering. In His grace, Sissy

I have been told that when your raise mostly crops...its a farm, when you raise mostly one type of animal its a ranch. I prefer farm. Just my 2 cents.

Well, see, it's like this...... We have 111 acres. I have cattle on part, and he has 300 sapling pecan trees on part.So do we have a ranch, farm, rancharm, farnch?

When we lived in Texas, we were sternly told by a RANCHer that a farm is cluttered with all sorts of miscellaneous objects, most of which are not being used. A ranch, on the other hand, is neat and tidy.

Was a huge discussion about this over at CS a long while ago, the concensus was that the farm or ranch designation exists strictly in the said owner's mind.

I always thought texans had ranches and all the rest of us had farms. :>)

Well, here's something to consider on the subject. Around here a farmhouse style house is always a two story while a ranch style home is a single story. FWIW

A farmer farms the land, cultivates it, applies fertilizer etc. Ranching is more akin to mining.

diane, speaking as a texan . . . a ranch is somethun' you turn a bolt with. As in "durn, mah son took my ranch from mah tuhlbox!"
