How 2 make a vcd from minidv

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

I recently purchased a Mini DV camera. I want to know how or which software to use in order to edit and burn a movie I created. I used the windows movie maker and found that easy to use, but I was unable to get this to record in a VCD format. I just want to be able to watch my work on my DVD player which does support VCD, and CD-R. Thank you in advance.

Thanks for the link, but it did not help much. I still need to know how or if it is possible to convert a movie made with windows movie maker onto a CD which then can be played on a telivision witha dvd player. Or if I can't convert the movie maker what software exists which would achieve my goal.

People thought it great that some form of movie editing program was included with WinME only to find out later it uses its own proprietary format that prevents, or at least doesn't make it easy for you to either encode to MPEG or export back to DV tape. Typical Microsoft but u have a choice: stop using it. Purchase ADSTech PyroPlatinum kit which includes a FireWire card and a complete version of Premiere that, plus freeware AVISynth and TMPGenc, will be all u need to create VCDs from DV tape. This is expounded on at length at such sites like www.geocities.com/aussie01au, www.flexion.org, and if www.vcdhelp.com didn't help much it's either u didn't heed it or it's too techie or both. Practice makes perfect.

I agree with MT, you should have been able to find what you needed at http://www.vcdhelp.com/ ... Of course, it might have helpled more if you weren't given the wrong URL http://www.vcdhelper.com/ by mistake earlier. :)

In order to do various conversions of video file formats:

http://www.vcdhelp.com/convert.htm

To specifically convert from WMV or ASF to a more readily editable format such as AVI:

If you need to quickly burn a VCD 2.0, SVCD or XVCD:

All of this additional software and converting this to that is crazy. It sound as if it is not possible to convert a movie made with the windows movie maker into a format which could be then played on a DVD player in VCD or SVCD format. If that is true then is there a similar easy to use program which functions like windows movie maker? Not a techi one. I have had limited success with Ulead software, but it is somewhat limited to the special effects, inserting music and photos. The Vcdhelp site is helpful, but I would still like to know if anyone knows of a good simple software program. Thanks for helping. This is a great site.

If you examine the deal closely it's not as if tons of s/w and h/w are needed to create VCDs from MiniDV tape. For h/w it's just the ADSTechPyroDV card. For s/w it's Premiere6 thatcame bundled with it, plus freeware AVISynth and TMPGenc that are easy to d/l and install. You can scarcely beat this combination for value, ease of use, and high output quality. If u follow the steps one by one on what Ross McC has to say on the matter on www.geocities.com/aussie01au you will wonder why u didn't venture that path earlier.

Get a mac and use imovie or final cut pro. Stop waisting your time on all this pc crap and just get it done with.

Nice, but can you encode to MPEG-1/2 with iMovie? After that can u use it to author your VCD?? Please, not Toast. Still smacks of Roxio.

I finally had some success converting my wmv movie into a vcd. I made and edited my dv using windows movie maker. Then I used the TMPGEnc software to convert it. Although the Tmpgenc does not list the wmv format, you just click the look for all files when adding files to convert and it works. I have yet to get a svcd to convert properly. Still working on that.
