Who is the man on the cover of this month's COUNTRYSIDE? It goes with Ken's article.

It is such a neat photo! Reminds me of my dad, who died in 1987 and lots of other men around here who still garden too!

Made me itch to get our garden going! We may plow under all the rabbit compost I've been putting on it all winter, this Friday, before it rains again. Hopefully we'll plant some early crops soon!

not sure, but that crop of broomsticks look just about ready to harvest.

add a mule and some rocky soil and he would be a ringer for a long gone Arkie relative of mine. nice pic.

My husband I were also talking about what a great cover it was! There is just something about that photo that makes it stand out in your memory and think about your Dad or Grandpa!

I forwarded the question to Anne-marie and this is her reply:

Sorry guys, I really don't know who he is. (And I do know it's not Ken—he's not a striped shirt kinda guy.) But I thought it was a neat picture, too.

I'll tell a story a bit out of school. Dave stopped by for a brief visit on his way through the area. One things we discussed were covers. Dave said about a day before deadline someone says, "What are we going to do for a cover?" Then there is a frantic search over commercial photo sites for a suitable one. They have to pay to use the photos and they are not cheap.

Dave also said he figures the cover has 3-4 seconds to catch someone's eye on the newsstand, so that is part of their evaluation.

In the past Anne-marie has requested any photographs sent in for cover consideration should be vertical, with good color contrast and one which immediately screams out "country". On the back of the photograph tape on a typed piece of paper with your name and address, a bit about the photograph, and a release statement authorizating Countryside Publications to use the photograph without compensation to you. If not used for a cover, it may be used in an article. Personally I am sucker for cute as the dickens children doing something with either gardening or with livestock.

What might be a good subject? Go back through your covers for the past two years to see what have been used.

Be aware though its use is very, very slim.
