I'm wanting to raise some Barnevelder or Welsummers chickens, but can't find any chicks for sale. I've seen the eggs for sale, but would rather buy chicks. Does anyone know of someone who raises them? I've checked all the online catalogs of hatcheries that I could find, and none of them sell these breeds. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

Cheryl, You can post on the Dark egg layer forum on Yahoo. Several people there raise them-but like you said, It's hard to find chicks. Hatching eggs are easy to find. One source for the chicks is barnevelders, marans and welsummers

I just purchased some marans eggs from a source here in OK. Let me know if you are interested in them too. Hope this helps!

This is a good thread to find. From what info I've been able to find the Barnevelders are the best layers of the really dark egg breeds so next year I'm going to try to score some myself. Looks like I'd better be about coming up with an incubator though.
