frig into freezer?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

We are replacing our small frig with a bigger one. Have noticed on several ocassions that even at a low setting, the frig freezes food. Is there a reason we cant use it as a storage freezer?

Yes it does!

The temperature probably isn't going to be consistently low enough (0 degrees or colder) for any type of long term storage. It may work for the short term however.

Talk to you later.

How does your refig work? Where is the condensor? Can you add insulation without decreasing the heat dissipation? Can you replace the Thermostat with one that actually goes low enough? How much electricity does it use? Is there a cost/benefit to trying to convert it to a freezer as opposed to buying the real thing? In other words, this is a big question that the techno-illiterate should probably not go.

It was not designed to hold the temperature low enough like a previous poster said. Putting up food for the frezer is hard work and is valuable stuff much too valuable to use a make shift freezer much less the danger of the food spoiling and making some one sick.
