My sick doe finally kidded

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Dairygoats : One Thread

I want to thank those who gave me advice and support with this doe. Even those who e-mailed privately. :) We got 2 doelings and a buckling yesterday. The doe had a really hard time, she just didn't even try to help get them out. The kids are fine and I have hopes of saving the mom too. She is still shocky and weak but has been able to stand up on her own and even ate a bit of grass hay and a mouthfull of the alfalfa. My four year old daughter was a great help handing me things and even saying that I could save the kids just keep trying! Arn't kids (the two legged ones)wonderfull! I would pass the babies to her to be dried while I tended the mom. She did tell the lady in the store that "mom had her hand up the goats butt" as I was paying for the groceries!

If anyone has any ideas on helping the doe let me know. Anyone else gone thru this? p.s. The doe is not in Ketosis (yet) since we are drenching her but the leg swelling and rear end weakness is still bad. The vet is staying in touch but we welcome any first hand advice. Thanks again

Congrats on getting those kids delivered. I have not had experience with the swelling, but I have found that most does really do appreciate having warm water brought to them after they kid. Sometimes I add just a little molasses to encourage them to drink, and as a treat. I also give mine a little grain after they kid. Boy, was I hungry every time after childbirth!lol

Kidding usually cures Ketosis. But now you have milkfever to worry about. Good luck with her, hope her kids will perk her will to live. Vicki
