EOS 10s repairs (worth it?_

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

I have a EOS 10s body which is in need of some repairs (shutter unit, lens mounting bracket). Where do I draw the $$ line? I am thinking around US$200. However, I do hesitate at being firm on that number since I have trouble finding any other camera that is of that kind of quality (semi-pro market), for anything less than $800-1000. Any advice?

The Elan 7 (eos 300). Is a great camera and offers more features than the Eos10s (well the eos7 being 10 years latter).

To replace the shutter is about $150 (I priced it last Summer at Canon Hawaii). If your lens mount is shot (!), I think the repairs will blow the budget.

The EOS 10S is a rather unique camera. It has much better low light AF and metering than the Elan 7E (30): AF EV 0 to 18 and metering is EV -1 to 20 (the Elan 7 AF & metering is EV 1 to 20. Plus, 5 fps motordrive and no infrared spocket hole counter (you can shot infrared film!). It has a wonderful AF assist light.

You might consider an EOS 5/A2 as a replacement. It matches the raw performance of the 10S and has the ease of use and most of the features of the Elan 7. Plus, it adds many goodies of its own such as 5 different focusing screens, 1/200 flash sync, etc. The Elan 7 has the excellent E-TTL flash with external EX Speedlites (the popup is plain TTL), but if you don't use flash much you won't care.

You can buy a new EOS A2 for $399 at B&H.

I think it depends on what your requirements for a camera are.

The 10s has a number of features - intervalometer, no-power shutter, compatibility with Kodak HIE infrared film - that current midrange EOS cameras lack. If you need those features it might be cheaper to fix the camera.

But if those features aren't important to you then perhaps a new camera like the Elan 7(E)/EOS 30/33 might be worth considering.

Have a look on the used market for a replacement 10s. The cost of a used 10s will be close to what your budget for repair is.
