420 EX questions

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

I am about to get a 420EX Canon Speedlight for my Elan 7E mostly for the power, swivel ability, and E-TTL exposure. What I am unfamiliar with is the fast sync option where you can use a flash all the way up to 1/4000 of a second. What conditions could/would this be used for and what is the slowest speed film that I could use this with. Any answers or links to answers would be great.

The Elan 7 is able to use ISO 6 film, if you can find any. Or as high as ISO 6400, if you can find any of that. These ranges are only possible when setting the ISO manually. With the auto DX coding to set the film speed the range is 25 to 5000 ISO.

The flash will work with any film speed the camera does, but the maximum flash distance would be very much shortened with ISO 6 film in it.

High speed sync is extremely useful for outdoor fill flash. You can set the F stop / shutter speed where you want it, without regard to the maximum standard sync speed of your camera. For portraits with a telephoto, I would rather shoot hand held at 1/500 than be locked at 1/125.

For typical outdoor fill flash, you loose about 1/3 of your effective range once you exceed max standard sync.
