Can anyone tell me what the chemical is that is in black walnut husks or trees that stop other trees from growing around them?

Thanks Phil

Hi,

The chemical is juglone.

It's not just other trees that have a problem, tomatoes and peppers are especially affected by juglans wilt. Other nut trees of this species can also cause this. We have a problem here with butternuts. If you do a search for juglans wilt, you can probably find a list of plants that aren't affected.

They've also found that this chemical stops athletes foot and jock itch.

This also can cause lameness in horses if they are bedded on Black Walnut wood chips.
