greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Hi my name is Jennifer, and I am new to baking. I found what appears to be a very simple Apple Bread recipe. Flour B.Powder B. Soda Sugar Vanilla Shredded Apples

Can I use I use 1 Cup chunky Apple Sauce instead of the one cup shredded Apples if maybe I drain off a little water. If you could please let me know asap. My husband loved it want wants 3 loaves for the superbowel. Last night was my first attempt. :)

I'm no expert when it comes to baking bread. (O.K. the rest of you all stop laughing!) But I would thingk that apple sauce would be to much moisture compared to the shredded apples. Maybe if you added more flour to even things out? You wouldn't want it to become tough though. And you wouldn't want to alter the recipe too much - hubby might not like the "new" version. By the way Jennifer, I'm sure there are many of us who would love a copy of your recipe. I know I would. Good Luck!

Blessings,

I'm not an expert baker either, but I would try it. If the batter looks runny, add a little flour. The end results may taste different, but who knows, you may like it better. I would like the receipe too. And lets us know if you used the applesauce and if it was okay. I always have applesauce on hand, but not always apples.

Go ahead and use the applesauce. You may have to bake a little longer because of the moisture but it should be fine. I use applesauce in place of oil in a lot of cake type receipts (cuts the fat, keeps the moisture.).

Well, since the game is on right now you've probably already done whatever you're going to do, but I hope you went ahead with it because I bet it worked. Shredded apples aren't that different in moisture content than drained applesauce. You might have needed to do one of the two things mentioned above (added a little flour or cooked a little longer, or at a slightly lower temp.) but I bet it would still work. Incidentally, I do tinker with bread recipes fairly often.

I use a basic bannana receipe that I also will sub applesauce, cranberry salad(i use cranberries, oranges, apples and strawberry jello in mine) and the same pumpkin custard you would mix up for a pie depending on which I use walnuts and extra spice let me know if you want the receipe. gail
