Pat Buchannon and "Death of the West"

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Political and Social Issues: Conversations and Debates : One Thread

Pat has come out with a book recently that is stirring up questions and controversy. In his numerous television interviews, Buchannon claims that by the year 2050 the United States will have fallen to the same level of developement as a third world country.

Mr. Buchannon cites the problems with illegal aliens and other foriegners abusing the system as reasons for the possible fall in status.

"Too many people are coming in to the United Staes and taking what they can in terms of money and then returning home." He said in one interview. "A lot are living in the United States, never learning to speak English and collecting welfare. They aren't interested in becoming citizens and contributing to society, they just want the get a quick buck."

The greatest numbers of these cases occur in the Southwestern States, with the large surges of illegals coming from Mexico.

Statements like these are reasons why Buchannon feels that unless we do something to change current trends, the United States could be in trouble.

In some ways, I feel Buchannon is very correct. There are abuses, and, they could be very crippling if allowed to go unchecked.

But, Buchannon is not against immigration. In an Q & A interview broadcast today Buchannon said "Immigration is like the Mississippi River. It helps us grow and adds life. But, as we know, when the Mississippi floods its banks it can be devistating. So too can immigration be devistaing when allowed to occur unchecked.

When I first heard of Buchannon's book, I was inclined to think he was being racist. But, this really isn't a racial issue, and it is important that it not be seen as one.

What is your take on Buchannon's views? Is immigration a problem in the US today? Is it another racial reaction?

The problem isnt immagration. Its welfare and aid. And the whole language thing. If Americans started moving to Mexico in record numbers do you think that they would start teaching school Bilingually? Hell no! We would have to learn spanish. As they should learn english.

I am proud that we have a nation that people want to come to. I think anyone who wants to become an American should, if they can contribute to sociaty. And the vast majority that I have seen here do. And very much so.

But we dont give as much welfare and aid as those California people do, so I imagine that most everyone there is either rich like Hollywood stars or on welfare and food stamps.

A big problem people have with immagrents is that they dont pay our taxes. Maybe we should switch to a National Sales Tax, a Libertarian alternative to the Income Tax. Then everyone would pay taxes. Even tourists. And the rich would have a huge tax on their new $100,000 cars and million dollar houses! Does that sound good to you, JOJ, Nexar?

I see many advantages to a sales tax INSTEAD of an income tax. I would never support a sales tax, though, unless there were an exemption on food, rent, and other basic necessities.

If there were ever even a CHANCE that this could take place, though, I'd want to do a lot more research on all the subtleties.

Well, you shouldnt pay taxes on rent. Yourr not buying it are you? And food? How abot have healthy fod tax exempt? We have the fatest country out there. WE ned more of an incentive for parents to buy good food nstead of junk food.

Sounds good to me; how would we decide what "healthy" food is? Maybe less than x amount of fat, more than y amount of protein? No preservatives? No GE food? No animal products?

-- joj (jump@off.c), February 05, 2002.

There are some healthier "animal products". There is more than just burgers and stuff. Ever had Emu? Better than beef. Cheaper and leaner. And they have a less impact on the enviroment. That is one of your main Anti-Meat arguments aint it? That and Mad Cow. I dont know if those Emu Birds get that or not. They might.

What I mean by healthy is veggies and fruits. Not chips and dip. Less tax on Ground Chuck than Ground Beef. Tax fast food. Not FDA Approved Health Food Restraunts. No tax on soy products. Or on baby food! Bottled water is a stupid American luxury. Tax it.

I won't argue vegetarianism. I'm still in the minority on that; however, there are more and more people coming around. There's hardly a city in the US that doesn't have lots of veggie restaurants now, and most "regular" restaurants have lots of good veggie selections, finally.

Even in Latin America I can find veggie cuisine now, which was certainly not the case when I first started travelling their in 1980!

Bottled water is a stupid American Luxury? I disagree. It's sort of like the Spotted Owl: it's an indicator of our dying ecosystem. I don't buy bottled water, as my water supply is pristine. I take my water with me, when I have to go somewhere else, though, or buy bottled water.

Tator, have you ever looked at an analysis of the water they are selling you through your water faucet?

-- joj (jump@off.c), February 07, 2002.

Yes. The feds came and tested it a year or two ago. There are towns that you dont drink in. And others right next to it that have great water. Strange. I am talking about $1.00 for a 20oz. bottle. Stupid. You can go and buy it at Wal~Mart for like 50 cents a gal. Iuka, MS sells spring water. The Town of Iuke gets their water from, you guessed it, that same spring. Some idiots that aint from here are thinking that they are getting somthing when they are not. Coca~Cola has water that they sell. Read the lable closely. It says that it has minerals added to make it taste like fresh spring water. So they are selling you cheap city water that is filtered even more and has other shit added to it! Gimmiabreak!

Mr. Buchannon said: "Too many people are coming in to the United Staes and taking what they can in terms of money and then returning home. A lot are living in the United States, never learning to speak English and collecting welfare. They aren't interested in becoming citizens and contributing to society, they just want the get a quick buck."

Shrug. Apart from the line about collecting welfare (which didn't exist then) the very same thing could have been said in 1890. It was pretty common then for immigrants to the USA to spend six or eight or ten years working in the USA and then going home to Greece or Italy or Poland or Latvia to set themselves up in their home village with their American savings. They left home poor. They came home well off and prospered. Americans do the same thing when they spend summers in Alaska and work on a crabbing boat for big money.

While these eastern and southern European immigrants lived here, they only learned enough English to get by. They had their own newspapers in their native language, shopped at their own grocery stores and attended their own churchs.

None of this is new. If Pat B. had been alive in 1900 he'd have predicted America would fall apart by 1950.

As for the "collecting welfare", the Gringrich Congress passed a very strict bill that cut off most forms of federal welfare to legal as well as illegal immigrants. Clinton signed it. It is the law today. It has always been true that the USA gets a good bargain both from legal and illegal immigrants. They work hard. They work cheap. They don't complain and they can't vote. They contribute to society big time, regardless of whether Pat is correct in saying they don't "want" to.

Well said, little nipper! Uh, shouldn't your name be "little dipper"?

Worldwide, the race is on by 3rd world citizens to get into White countries that speak English. Legally or illegally. They make a mess of their own countries and seek greener pastures.

No matter how hard these people, and their children try, the vast majority cannot assimilate into the mainstream culture. Even with the 3rd generation.

They form ghettos instead.

This is NOT desirable. South Africa showed the world what happens to a White country when, over a long period of time, 3rd world people fill the low paid jobs. The lazy Whites lose their country.

California is following suit, which is amazing. I don't agree with Buchanan's prediction over the whole of the USA, but California could go its own way, renamed Calimexico.

Buchanan is astute in his realisation that successful countries must have a dominant culture. In the US, this is ASC culture. If newcomers can't assimilate, they must return from whence they came.

The USA is down to 75% White. Australia is 96%. The UK 95%. It is getting serious.
